So, I removed the snorkel and took her for a ride. Can't say I noticed any difference in the performance. What have you observed?

On removing side cover, discovered dealer had removed snorkle during pre delivery. AI removed, Madaz pipes and 120 mains also installed at same time.
Bike was pulling great, however running lean with very blue left pipe.
Stuck it back on after reading some threads here and cant say there's any difference.
At the same time as bike was popping badly on over run screwed mixture jet out to 3 turns from 2 .
No popping and pipes cooler.

For whatever reaon it seems to make a much bigger difference on the cruisers. I was told by another speedy owner that i should remove it because it gave him a big boost. I did and it made the biggest improvment i've had to date with any mod or jetting i've done. But then both he and i have aftermarket free flowing pipes, and if yours are stock thats probably why.

Removed mine on a Black Bonnie and it was louder on the intake but did not run as smoothly when running at low speed. Put it back in.

Doctor,
120s probably still a bit lean. I had 115s in 790 motor with similar exhaust/intake. Put it back in a nd see if it goes better .. if it does then you need to up mains.

I put on D&D pipes, 130 mains, 42 pilots, and ran those for a while. I took the snorkel out a few days later, and noticed a definite increase in performance by the "butt dyno" method. Also seemed to accelerate a little smoother.
Like Dazco said, if you didn't add freere pipes at the same time, it probably won't do much....Gotta open up both the air in and air out bits to take advantage of the changes.

Morning All,
I didn't remove my snorkel, but, I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N air filter. While I was there I drilled about a dozen 1/4" holes in the snorkel in an effort to get more air into the engine. Since it's winter here I can't report if it makes any difference. I have the 'off-road' pipes as well so I'm hoping that it frees up the air flow. Jets may need adjustments in the spring.

I have the D&Ds also with 130 mains and stock 40 pilots--AI removed. I'll have to ride some more to tell what's going on down there--snowing here now so it's going to be a while

I can't speak to a before & after, as it was the gentleman from whom I bought the bike who performed the surgery. Though he only put a total of 800 miles on the bike, he said the difference was quite significant.
I'm taking it to the next level by having just ordered one of these, a glorified "velocity stack." Do I expect that it'll make a difference? Who knows.........

Hey that 'glorified velocity stack' is an interesting idea. I see that they do not fit the America or SM. I need to dig the SM back out of its winter storage cocoon and see if I can't gin up a velocity stack. I believe that I could spin a nice aluminum stack and than squeeze it into an oval. I wonder if it would be good to have one above and below, since many have drilled open the bottom of their air boxes?
I have made velocity stacks for other engines and while they look really cool I have not see giant gains in performance from the addition. Still, it has got me thinking!
