Sorry if I'm in the wrong area, but I need some recommendations for a heater for my garage. I tried to do some mods to my Bonnie today and I was to uncomfortable to stay in the garage. It was 17 degrees this morning! My garage is only one bay and is attached to my house. However, I can't access it from inside the house I have to go outside!

If your garage isn't insulated than heating it will be pretty tough but I imagine it can be done if you got one of those torpedo shaped kerosene heaters that also have a high speed blower built into them.

If it's insulated then any basic kerosene heater would probably heat up a one bay garage pretty quickly....or at least bring the temp up to where it's workable.

Kerosene heats well but I can't stand the stink and hassle of buying kerosene.

I like those portable radiant units they heat up my 2 car garage fast. I looked at gas fired furnaces but decided I wasn't crazy about having an open flame in the garage. :flam: The super safe garage furnaces are way too pricey for me.

A buddy of mine uses those oil filled heaters(that look like old home radiators on wheels) to keep the garage temp from dropping too low then uses the radiant heater to warm it up all the way when he's working.

I think I'll pick up one of those oil filled heaters too to help keep my Bonnie warm on those cold Colorado nights.

I have a Coleman Radiant Propane heater. My garage is insulated and after running for a few minutes, holds the heat well. The propane doesn't smell like a kerosene heater and is a little more convenient. Mine uses the same tanks as our gas grill so I always have a full tank or two around.

I would stick with electric heat, but you would probably need about a 15K heat strip running off 220v considering it's a 1 car garage but you're in Boston. I had an A/C window unit in a 2 car garage a while back and it worked fairly well. It was an 18K BTU A/C with a 15K heat strip and the double door wasn't insulated but then again it never got to 17 degrees that I can remember. The down side of course is the cost. As a side note, I think there has to be sufficient ventilation when using any type of kerosene or propane heaters. You don't want to wind up like those people that ran their gasoline generators inside their houses after the recent hurricanes, they took a nap and never woke up.

Great reminder. I always crack a window in my garage for some fresh air. The propane heater will suck the oxygen out of my garage in short order without cracking the window.

Whatever solution you finally decide upon PLEASE be aware of and cautious about carbon monoxide poisoning. I lost a brother to that due to a propane lantern. Any propane device in a closed area can produce disaster. It is a silent killer.

Every time I read a post like this I realize how lucky I am living in a warm climate. I don’t think I could survive in these types of conditions that you are living in. I mean if I have to wear a jacket for the whole day in mid winter I start getting upset. For me when it goes below 8 degree Celsius = 46.4 degree Fahrenheit at night in mid winter it’s like the end of the world has come. We normally run at around 14 degree Celsius = 57.2 degree Fahrenheit during the day.

I really feel sorry for you lot having to store your bikes in the winter, I could not do it.
