for example, the triple clamp is clear coated as are most if not all aluminum pieces. But do they do this to SS too? Specifically the fork shrouds? I'd like to polish them to a chrome like finish with semichrome polish, but if they are coated i don't want to do it. So does anyone know? They appear not to be, but i just wanted to see if anyone can assure me they are raw metal.

Your SM shrouds are not clear coated and can be polished. SS can be clear coated, but I'm not aware of any such parts on Hinckley Bonnevilles.

Every time I wax my bike I apply more Semichrome to the shrouds. They are starting to look really nice now.

tried it after work. Using semichrome by hand or with a dremel it didn't make a lot of difference. i know why tho...the tooling marks. It's those fine lines that go around them that looks like something that was turned on a lathe. (of course it's not, but thats the look) The surface much be smooth in order to get max shine, and those marks would have to be polished or sanded out. A guy at BA said he used a polishing wheel on a grinder and that it took a long time. So by hand or dremel it's gotta be a long long tough job. you can make it look better, but not close to chrome like you could with a wheel or endless elbow grease..

On a brighter note i sanded the lower triple clamp and polished it and it's beginning to look like chrome. I need to sand it much more tho and sand that casting ridge off at the bottom edge. But once i'm done i won't need to buy one of those chrome covers.

You think your triple clamp is bad, check out an '02. Mine is very rough. Some parts are clear-coated, like the riders on my '02. Guess they are aluminum.

"Fryguy" on the BA boards is the group metal polisher. He's posted some good tips/materials.

I dunno....mine might give yours a run for the money as roughness goes. Looks as tho they casted them using sand as a mold. :-D I'm gonna have to do a lot more sanding the get the results i want, but it will happen. just didn't have time after work to spend more than 1/2 hour on that and the shrouds.
