I've been searching posts but can't seem to find a definitive answer to my issue. My Bonnie has been a bit slow to fire after it is warmed up. I even had a bit of a backfire(?) in one of the carbs yesterday while trying to start it. I am pretty much stock except for AI removed and rear baffles removed. My idle screws are at 2.5 turns out. Elevation here is 6500 feet and the bike only has 800 miles on it. I tried turning the idle screws out to 3 turns but it seems like they are just about to fall out. How many turns should they open before coming out? Any ideas about the hard starting? TIA.

Some people go 4 turns which could potentially help you. Maybe yours just feel looser than others but they shouldn't come loose if you go to 4 turns. There are little rubber seals on them that would probably keep them from vibrating loose.
By the way, when i first removed my AI i also had pretty bad starting problems which i also found some others have had after removing the AI. But it seemed like mostly people with California models so i attributed it to the Ca emissions canisters. Maybe not tho. maybe just some bikes develop this after AI removal for some reason. I'm not saying thats why, but for me and some others it was. Anyway, after i put the thunderbike pipes on it stopped doing that. Maybe it's just a certain state of tune that when just right causes it and any changes eleviates it. I'd try at least 3-1/2 turns and see if that helps.

It's practically new. Take it back to the dealer. Test start it a few times before you leave the dealer to be 100% certain the problem has been corrected.

I went ahead and pulled out the idle mixture screws and slotted them. I've been trying to adjust them with a home-made D-tool. After putting them back in it appears they were out a lot further than I thought. I guess I wasn't getting them turned in all the way before. I put them back in and set them at 3 turns. It seems to be idling a lot better now and so far the hard starting problem seems better too. My screw up but I will post this and maybe someone can learn from my mistake.
