'12 Thruxton - Remove Tach or Speedo?

Thinking of cleaning up the dash area with one of Benjie's headlight buckets. I thought I remembered reading that the efi bikes can't run with the speedo disconnected.

Is that correct? Assuming that's the case, am I safe to remove the tach and just put the speedo in the headlight bucket? Will she run without the tach connected?

That is correct. In the end you want know mileage and speed so I would keep the speedo.

I don't see how removing the tach would cause any problems. It is just reading voltage not sending a return to the ecu.

My 2012 standard Bonneville came with the speedo only. I bought a tach and when I installed it the plug that goes to the tacho was only plugged into the idiot lights. You shouldn't have any problems removing the tacho and just letting the plug dangle or whatever, just know that that plug is also what powers the idiot lights.

Either do speedo only (most of us know when to shift...you can hear and feel the motor).

Or you could always get a smaller tach and speedo like this:

Cheers

noob question: is it legal to remove the speedo if the bike came with it? Also: loving the retro looking speedo above.

Yes. If your bike has the CAN-BUS wiring system, (later ones have that), tampering with the instruments can be fraught with difficulties and heartache... One or two members have tried to mod that area and have given up...

There are dire warning in the EFI service manual about it, leave the speedo in place.

Interesting because my 2010 EFI T100 with front wheel speedo has had the speedo go out twice--something in broke in speedo gear at the hub. So I've ridden a lot of miles with tach only. Bike ran fine.

Was my speedo supposed to be sending info to the ECU and how could it do that if it was getting no reading? Does this only apply to the 2011 and later Bonnies with tranny speedos?
