The road narrows. Rapidly
approaching curves are
analyzed in a heart beat,
executed and gone.
What lies ahead is the
future, distant horizons
only seconds away.
The past holds memories
of errors too costly to repeat,
beyond this it is of little value.

Our currency is the machine,
united we are an empowered
consumer. Call our speed commerce,
the road ahead commodities on
which we gamble our fortunes.

My mind still recalls a road vanishing
beneath me, the windscreen lowered,
my daughter and I tucked in, harbored
by the eddy our RT created.
Turbulent winds howled around us as
we streaked across the desolate landscape
of scab-rock and tumble weeds. The engine
surge peaked, giving way to a turbine like
whine. A glance at the clock
revealed our speed.

Call it a gamble or a merger of
two fortunes, but this baptism of
speed was expressed with great
enthusiasm by our recent college
graduate. "Mom, guess
how fast dad and I went today?
130, I could see the needle
over Dad's shoulder." Her mother
smiled, she knew this day would
come.

Speed, the interpreter of
time and distance.

I suppose I could have taken
daughter to the local carnival,
possibly even won her a teddy
bear at the baseball toss.

Could have, but our time together
was short, the distance great,
and I had much to say.

Merrill, it's been a while since I have seen one of your posts. Good read as always.

Hey Larry, glad you liked the
read. Haven't posted during
the summer months. I had
intended to, but had also
intended to put the snow
shovel away from last winter
and take the snow blade off
our tractor. However, as I
gaze out the window, there's
the snow shovel right
where I left it last March, and it
appears the tractor is already
setup to plow snow. Honestly
I can't account for the time. This
was the fastest summer on
record.

I wrote this piece in response to
threads on the bmw site. Several folks
were discussing the merits
of excessive caution. Reminded me of that old philosophy, " 55 saves
lives." I have always been of the
opinion that to stay alive on a
motorcycle one must ride with
a degree of aggression. If somethings
not right, Pass It! THat being said, I
don't weave in and out of heavy
traffic attempting to pass everyone
in front of me. That type of conduct
gives us bikers a bad rapport with
the cagers. Oh, but I do pick my
times and places to wick it up.
Out here in the west we aren't
plagued with heavy traffic and
congested roads. It's a motorcyclist's
paradise. When you live in the land
of plenty you shall not want.

Merrill,

You almost sound like a "retired" person. I swear I had a lot more time before I retired. Since I retired I don't seem to have time to get anything done. I do make time for riding; but before retiring, I didn't have to "make time" for riding--the time was just there.

Winter around here is the time for many outside tasks that cause one to overheat if done in the hot summer. I have my list started: 1) replace fence; 2) repair culverts; 3) cut down some trees and trim others; 4) build gun range. I'm going to do number 4 and if there is any time left, I may look at the others. :-D

I look forward to reading more threads from you this winter!
