I believe there are a few of us on this board who remember well the classic Triumphs of the 1960's. If so, I have a few questions:

1- I seem to recall there were 500cc and 650cc bikes offered and both offered either 1 or dual cabs, correct?

2- assuming #1 is accurate, why would someone have bought a dual carb bike when the single carb ones were practically as fast and as I recall a LOT less hassle? My guess is they wanted the biggest/fastest bike they could get. Plus, the dual carbed engine just looked a little better/balanced and had a cool sounding name, Bonneville.

3- why would someone buy a 500cc vs a 650cc, aside from price? I can't believe the gas consumption was much different so why not have a little more power, right?

Any other comments/observations are welcome.

Thanks

The twin carb 500 (Daytona) is substantially quicker than the single carb 5TA. Differences didn't stop at the carbs. The Daytona has bigger valves and porting in the head, different cams, different gearing (I think) and possibly other things that I don't remember just now.
They were referred to as 'twin carb' because that's the easily identified visible difference.
I believe that the 650/500 bikes were also different in other ways, so that it's not as simple as 'why not have the bigger motor'.

My 30 cu. inch trophy ( 500cc) really runs out. With 10.5 to 1 pistons, erson cams, reworked heads and mikuni carbs a 30 inch motor really screams. In some applications it will walk all over a 40 0r 45 cubic inch motor on race day. ( short tracks)

The sound cant be beat and they rev up like crazy.

I kind of compare the two like a small block and big block chevy if that helps.
