I know Triumphs are assembled in England, but to what extent, and what about the parts? Are most of the parts made in Asian countries? What's the situation with Harley Davidsons? Is it kinda the same situation as our Triumphs? I want to have the facts on Triumph because I know this question is going to come.

It is the same situation with HD as with Triumph. I suspect more Triumph parts are British made than HD parts are American made. The same situation exists with automobiles. Some "foreign" autos have more American parts that American brand autos. Global economy.

The carbs are made by Keihin, which is a Japanese company. The same carbs are used on some Harleys, and Mikuni, another Japanese manufacturer, manufactures the rest. The batteries on Harleys and Triiumphs are Yusa, which is another Japanese company. The brakes are either Japanese ((Nissin) or Italian (Brembo). If you ride on Michelins, they are made in France. If you have Metzelers, they are made in Germany. I seem to recall from another site that the rims are Italian. The list could go on and on. The big, important bits, like the engine and the tranny, are certainly made in England, just as Harley makes its own proprietary engine and transmission.

I am sure all of the component parts are shipped to Hinckley and assembled there, so Triumphs are certainly as British as Harleys are American. Don't let anyone give you any baloney about their "American-made" bikes. In today's world economy, there's almost no product which is entirely manufactured in its country of origin.

I would think that even back in the day a lot of what is outsourced now was then too. In fact it would seem that with todays production technology it would be easier for a company to produce it's own parts for more of a bike than it would have back then. But back then i don't think people questioned things like this as they do now. Just a thought.......maybe i'm wrong, but that would seem logical to me at least.

Good answers all. In fact, if one thinks about it, it's almost silly to ask a question like this any more in a global economy.

Like dazco said, there was always a lot of outsourcing...it just happened to mostly be in the same country, whereas now it can be anywhere in the world.

Even way back when, there was no need for Triumph or Norton or the other English bike makers to fabricate their own carburetors, for instance. It's a specialized field (even more so now with emission standards), and it would've been redundant effort and machinery for each company to get involved. Better to tell Amal how many you needed for the year and let them do it. Likewise with the electrics...although those of us from that era devoutly wished they could have found someone other than Lucas. Mechanical instruments...even more specialized skills involved. Hydraulic brakes...call Lockheed.

Today, only the vendors have changed.

Most makers in the olden days insisted on doing their own frames, tanks, engines and transmissions in their own plants, and among the major bike makers today (Triumph included) that tradition continues. Now, however, it doesn't mean that the Triumph-owned tank factory or frame factory are located in England. But England is where the machines are designed, the tanks and bodywork get painted, the bikes are assembled in finished form and tested.

The biggest diff..............

Nearly everything was outsourced in England for meridan and before.

Now its a global market, and the diversity of sources reflects this.
