Please forgive if this is an obvious question...
Saturday night, I rode the bike for the first real time at night and while the bike was warming up with choke on, about a foot of the pipes from the engine were actually a GLOWING orange. It looked cool as hell but it did make me wonder for am minute if it was good or not. Once the choke was removed, the pipes returned to normal.

dawgfan,

I have a new bonnie black also (about a month old now). Mine did this too after my first couple of rides. I've read elsewhere on this post that this is normal, especially since the bikes are made to run so lean. I understand that this is what causes them to run on the hot side and make the pipes glow. I'm not sure how the choke factors in to this. Maybe someone else can help there.

Probably the AI causing that because it causes the unburned fuel in the exaust to burn by injecting air into it. Most people remove it and the bikes do run cooler w/o it, especially the exaust.

The A.I has been out since the day I got it as well as snorkel I think (per shop). I have D & Ds.
Might have just been due to the long needed warmup. I just needed to make sure nothing major was wrong.

Nothing wrong, just maybe letting her sit a little to long while warming up. My 04 has done this since new (both with the AI and without) if I let it fully warm up before riding off. Even if the pipes start glowing, within a couple of miles they cool back down enough to lose the glow (too bad cause it actually is kind of cool looking).

I had an XS100 Yammie a while back and all 4 pipes used to glow a pretty orange. I rode it for years and didn't notice any negative effects until the pipes finally rusted through.

Make sure your leg doesn't touch the pipes of it will effing burn.........

TC: The pipes of my bike never glows as you describe. I normally dont warm up my bike more that a couple of minutes. Just until i put my gear on ( gloves , jacket , full face helmet etc) . Then i leave the house with the choke about 1/2 way out for about a mile or so. In addition to that the AI system was removed at the dealer on my request . I provide them with the AI kit the very same day i bought the bike. I also on the advise of some of our good friends here open the "pilots screws 3 to 31/2 turns out ( you probably going to either have to make a tool for this or get one as i did from the good people of "New Bonneville". It runs awesome . My bike is pure stock Std. "Bonnie".

Good luck ; Ride Safe.

Just the opposite way than you'd expect, actually. Too rich a mixture also causes exhaust gas to be too hot.

Dawgfan, a glow from the pipes is normal after a run, but generally a dull red. You may have been using more choke than you needed during warmup. I wouldn't worry about it happening once in a while, but I'd try to avoid it as a regular thing.
