Where is the dragon and what is the lure of it. Can an old man ride it without being ran over by a bunch of crotch rockets?

Go to tailofthedragon.com. That will tell the where's. As far as the lure....I've rode on twisties before however, This is the only road like this that has no driveways, or side streets. The road itself is in great condition and it is easy to read. The scenery is fantastic and the people that I talked to were all very friendly. There are many roads around there that are worthy of riding and they alone can make a trip there worth it. As far as getting run over....Every Harley I passed would move over slightly to ensure safety. The only real worry is people crossing into your lane from the opposite direction. I see you are in Wa. and I suspect there are wonderful roads nearer to you. But for this side of the garden, The Dragon region is top notch. That's my 2 cents.

The Dragon is an 11 mile stretch of US 129 as it crosses the mountain from NC into TN (or vice versa). I first rode it in 1967 on a '66 TR6. It is simply a set of switchbacks going up the mountain and a set of switchbacks coming back down.

Yes, you can safely ride it. However, I would recommend riding it Monday through Thursday or early in the morning on Saturday or Sunday. I try to avoid riding it on a weekend. On the weekends, it can be crowded with squids and sports cars.

It is a unique ride and there are many other fine rides in that area of eastern TN, western NC and northern GA. Most are less demanding than the Dragon and have shorter stretches of hair pin turns.

Sounds similar to a road we accidently took on the way to Florida one year with the family... my son puked out the minivan window and I could smell my brakes!!! All that time the theme song to Deliverance running through my head!

The "Dragons Den" tavern and the "Bikes Only" camp ground were very inviting!

Be safe--- summers over!
