I'm having trouble getting my 18t sprocket back on the countershaft with the chain already on. Anybody got tips or perhaps a way to loosen the chain so I can get this beast finished?

zig,
loosen the the back axle and screw the bolts on the adjusters inwards. If you do them both the same amount of turns you won't have to worry about alignment. I pulled my chain off the back sprocket then put it all around the front. Then on as best I could on the back then turned the wheel to pull the chain on.
Make sure the chain is adjusted correctly not too tight about 1 1/2" to 2" on the sidestand seems right, but check when you are sitting on it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to put a bit of lube on the new sprocket as well.

Cheers
Darcy :chug:

Ok, none of this is working. I really don't want to loosen the rear axle, and the wheel turning trick isn't doing it. How the heck has everyone else done this so easily?

The axle has to be loose to get enough slack for the 18t.Once its loose enough, drape the chain over over the 18t,then put the 18 on the shaft.Much easier and not as harmful as rolling it on.

If none of that works you may have to add a half link to your chain.

The proper way is to loosen your rear axle and do as others have mentioned. Just like a chain adjustment except instead of removing the slack, you are turning the adjusters the other way to ADD slack. This MUST be done. Very easy.

Woops! Rolled it on and finally finished. Sorry, lost patience. Where should the adjusters be now that I'm done?

If you rolled it on, you probably need a new chain.

Really? Even when loosening the rear axle? Everything looks fine to me.
