While doing a search last nite on air flow related posts i noticed a post by i think clifford that titled something along the lines of "cheap performance boost" or such. He mentioned trying something a bit further than just snorkel removal and said it really made a difference beyond just removal. yet no one replied to his post and it made me wonder if i should try this.

If you pull the snorkel you'll notice that there is still a lip around the hole that is about 20-25% smaller than the filter diameter. He said he snipped this lip[ off so that the hole left where the snorkel went was now the same diameter of the filter thereby adding a considerably larger hole for air flow. I don't recall his exact words but he said it added considerable gain in performance. Unlike removing a restrictor plate or some other thing thats shown not to be good in all cases, snorkel removal is already a known performance gain for speedmasters pretty much to a man, so why wouldn't more of the same be better? Sure, you might have to rejet to get the benefit if it's on the edge after snork removal, but i'm rejetting soon anyway.

I want to do this but i'd hate to ruin the stock part if for any reason i want the snorkel back on. (not that i can imagine that but who knows what might come along) So i was wondering if anyone else has done this?

You ARE the snorkle removal guy! Price a new one ,and if it's cheap enough roll the dice and chop on your original one ;some one's gotta do it,inquiring minds want to know..

Naaa....just the snorkel removal follower guy, and the one who most recently tried it so i'm still kinda blown away by such simple performance boosts. but if this works as good as clifford said i gotta think others have tried it. I will price a new one, but if it's stupid expensive like most triumph stuff i'll be a waste of money if it backfires.

Also, aside from the possible high price, looking at the exploded view in the manual it hit me that the airbox almost surely sells only as a complete unit and you probably can't buy that part seperatly. So if for any reason i'm sorry i did it i'm probably gonna be out a few hundred bucks if i need a new one, not to mention the tedious task of installing a new box.

You gotta find someone with a SM who has already changed to a NARK and can sell you an airbox to experiment on...an 865 SM ...kinda narrows it down.

Ok, I figured out a way to do this without cutting those edges off and i think i know where my bike stands as far as jetting now. I simply removed the plate ! Granted, the filter is then sitting there with nothing holding it in (tho on a speedy it's mounted from the top so no problem with the filer sliding out) and some air can get in the gap between the filter and airbox. But i did this just to test it and see if the extra airlow would be worth cutting the edge off the thing. Not wanting to ride around like that for long obviously, i just rode around the block about a mile.

So what i found was a much worse running bike. The more i opened the throttle the more it hesitated and lost power. It seemed to affect the entire range, but it got worse the more i opened the throttle and faster i went. And the hesitation only happened as the throttle got past about the 1/2 way point. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe what this says is that after Tpipes and snorkel removal my jetting, perticularly the main, was running lean and at it's limit for ability to deliver fuel fast enough. The little extra airflow made it too lean and the jet couldn't keep up. That tells me that i ordered those 130's just in time ! So once i install them i expect a quicker bike and hopefully the 130's will be big enough to allow me to try this test again and be successfull, at which time i'll cut the edges off and i should gain a good bit if what the guy (i don't think it was clifford after all, tho i could be wrong either way) who gave me the idea really got the added boost he suggested. i just wonder if the pilots should go up too, tho Dinqua says no to that or needle shims in his carb jetting tutorial. i think he;'s suggesting to only do that if MAJOR airflow is introduced like the freak. In any case, now i can't wait to get those jets in. Alread did the allen head carb screws so it should be a breeze. hey, this is starting to get real fun ! :-D

Ahhh......i just found that post again and it WAS clifford. And he said exactly what i found.....that it was "suddenly very lean" when he did it. He said he rejetted to 125's (his is a bonnie) and the mid to top performance "improved dramatically. Man o man am i ever looking forward to getting those jets now !! Heres the post...........
