Odd problem. '04 Bonnie is just broken in, serviced, has run well and without any issues. I've run about 800 miles since the first service. Now, when I start up in the morning, pulling out the choke causes the engine to race; I have to push the choke almost all the way in to get a comfortable "warming-up" idle. I used to pull the choke all the way out to get that good warm-up idle. Bike also doesn't quite feel right: warm idle and acceleration seem a bit off--almost like a V8 that's got a miss. I have done no mods and no tinkering with the carbs. Any ideas, gang? I could simply take a ride to the dealer, I s'pose...

I believe the choke is working perfectly normal. I also do not let my bike run on high, reducing the choke somewhat as soon as possible after starting, but the choke is working correctly. As far as the slight loss of power, well it could be a LOT of things. I could make a bunch of guesses, but you could try making one small change at a time until you find something.Maybe start by pulling the plugs and seeing what they look like?Dropping or upping your fuel octane.Running your bike a little hard for a small amount of time, could be a little carbon-ed up if you broke it in gentle like. There are all kinds of things that you can look at, if you are inclined to. Have fun, learn, and enjoy. Al

I've noticed that on may have to adjust my idle up and down during the ride and not the choke. Sometimes it seems like I'm running with the throttle open. So, at a stop sign I'll make an adjustment to move it closer to 750 rpm. I'm sure this idle variability is affecting my mpg somewhat.

You will have to vary to amount of choke you use depending on the temperature. The rubber caps or plugs on the carbs and intake manifolds will get loose over time from heat and can create a vacuum leak. I've wrapped wire around mine to keep that from happening.
