Due to a personal financial crisis a couple of years ago, I was without a bike for about 13 months. One of the things I missed most about it was not giving and getting the "wave." I somehow felt disconnected, exiled from my community.

I wave at everyone, Harleys to Vespas, unless the circumstances won't permit it. Most riders wave back and it feels good when they do. It's like being recognized by a friend in a crowd.

Wavin' at ya,

Allan

If the question is, who DOESN'T seem to respond favorably to my wave?......

As a former BMW owner, I'm ashamed to say that it's the Beemer folk on their "on/off road" GS models (more often than not) who refuse to acknowledge that there are other bikes out there worthy of their recognition.

Gold Wing guys just tip their fingertips up off the grips momentarily.

Crotch rocket riders seem likely to flip the inverted peace sign if they're able to do anything but hang on.....

Harley owners reveal themselves as either an "outlaw", bikerider, motorcycle enthusiast, or RUB wannabe by the way they wave. You gotta have a trained eye to read 'em though....

Nerds, geeks, and weirdos are quick to hold up the palm of their hand perpendicular to the tarmac, with their arm bent at a distinct right angle.

If I have time to recognize an oncoming bike as that of exotic heritage, I wave then give 'me a "thumb's up!" I'm identifying myself as a fellow elitist snob who likes bikes outside of the cookie cutter realm....... Yes, I said snob.... albeit a friendly and accepting "snob".

I'd say about 70% of the riders in the UK I see will nod or wave back. You can never be sure whether those that don't acknowledge you are ignoring you or concentrating on the fact they are heading too fast into a corner!

Keep on waving - start a trend!

You know... I think that we Triumph owners should have our own distinctive wave so we can say 'hi' to similarly enlightened riders we encounter. The obvious would be two fingers together and straight up, like the boy scout oath position, signifying 'vertical twin'. (Careful you don't spread them into a V) Of course this might not be acceptable to triple and quad riders. I guess we'll have to hold some sort of convention to decide such an important matter. :-)

You should see all the bitching about the lack of waving on the Corvette forum site. And that is within the same marque. The new C-5/6 Corvette guys do not wave at the older Corvettes. The C-2 guys do not wave at anything newer than the C-2. And the C-1 guys wave at no one but C-1 guys. Just to funny! Al :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

I find this whole waving thing a major P.I.T.A.

I understand the principal behind it. And i DO wave. But here's what I don't like about it...

1) If I don't wave, I feel like an ass.
2) Bikers will wave at times when it just isn't feasible for me to take my hands off the bar. See #1
3) There are so many other bikes out when I'm out that it just gets old quick. See #1
4) It's dangerous. Even if I'm in the straights.... if I'm doing 100mph, taking my hand off the bar is not a great idea. Ya, i could nod but that takes some real head movement to be noticeable. See #1

So it gets to the point that I almost wish I wasn't seeing other bikes out there. But at the same time I like the whole commraderie thing. So I'm torn. But it's still a p.i.t.a. :hammer:

I have noticed around my town that I get the wave from more sport bike riders than H-D riders. It might be because the riding positon of the thruxton is more sportbikeish but I wave at everybody on 2 wheels. :yayyy:
