As I started out this morning to go for a ride, my oil pressure light came on strong. Turned around, went home (half a block), checked tthe oil and added some. Started the bike and the light went off. Got to the corner and it was back on again. Went home and garaged it. It was fine last weekend and theonly thing I did was wash the bike. Could I have shorted something out or do these motors have an oil pump that can fail? Help?!

Thanks for any ideas...

Jeff

I may have fixed it. I started pulling and cleaning connectors and found one on the bottom that looked like it may have something to do with the OP light. Pulled it, cleaned it, plugged it back in. No light now. I hope that's all it was.

Jeff,it could be as simple as the sending unit got unplugged while you were drying the bike off,or like you say, moisture in the sender, wire harness or instument panel.Check your fittings and wiring plugs and try it again. Most electrical issues I`ve read about here come after washing or riding in the rain.I don`t remember any bad oil pump threads. Was your oil low before you put more in?Its not like you`r riding a Honda generator with a very effective low oil failsafe that kills the moter BEFORE damage occurs,we got a neat idiot light instead. I won`t mention your still under warranty because that is small consolation to being without your bike during repairs.

Thanks! At least we were on the same page. I didn't really think it was anything serious as the bike had been fine up 'til now. Anyhow, thanks for your input.

Jeff,

It sounds like you found your problem elsewhere; however,
I posted some time back when I replaced the wiring harness from the headlight shell area to the instruments. This harness is an invitation for trouble. The rubber sleeve around the harness is ty-rapped tightly to the connector body in the headlight shell. The other end is about 6" higher at the instruments and open! The design of the harness cover at the instruments on my T-100 is such that moisture can easily get into the protective sleeve--especially if you ride in the rain. The moisture cannot escape at the bottom end and can collect at the connector! No other connector inside the headlight shell is done this way.

My specific problem was the loss of instrument lighting on the speedo. What I found was corroded splices inside the harness sleeve--one splice had come apart. The connector in the headlight shell was full of corrosion. The replacement wiring harness had the protective sleeve ty-rapped tightly to the bottom connector. I cut the ty-rap, shortened the sleeve by 1/2", and put an "anti-oxidation" compound on the connector prior to install.

My dealer covered the new harness ($115) under warranty. I talked to the mechanic, and he said he has replaced a few of these. He blamed the problem on poor splicing of the instrument power wires inside the harness. The shrink rap that covered the splices in my original wire harness were not installed very well, IMHO.
