This is friggin great ! I asked Graeme at Tbike about the pipes on an 05 speedy recently at BA. I asked him whether he thought the 865 speedy could benefit from air or jet mods. He told me they hadn't found anything that works and that this engine benefits a bit from the pipes, but w/o head/cylinder/cam work the engine doesn't respond to further air or jetting mods.

Well, i started a post to tell him that my snorkel removal had made my bike jump a good bit, and he said he'd have to try that sometime. So just now i see he posted back and was sorta blown away after trying it himself ! Heres his post...

We are doing our camshaft testing today. We`ve just done some runs with std. pipes to see how much we can improve a quiet bike with some head work (considerably)for those interested in a street sleeper. We then tried some with the snorkel out as you and others suggested and the readings improved by a noticeable margin - to our surprise I might add as the std. pipes are still holding things back.

So yes - instant power! - mixture appears ok but further testing will tell, please remember now I am referring to std. pipes at the moment.

We are about to get our own pipes on now, we have been looking forward to this for about 1 year now so we`ll keep you posted, and will have lots of different dyno curves for all the various 900 tune variations, its looking good though.

But seriously...i don't mean to make fun of them. They built a good pipe thats really made me smile and have treated me well responding to all my constant inquirys and all. And to be fair they probably have so many things going on between all the models not to mention they aren't ONLY triumph there. But it did seem funny that they'd never tried that considering how often it's mentioned. What really strikes me is how they said it gave considerable gains even with stock pipes ! I think they'll be even more suprised when they see the improvment after Tpipe install. Hopefully it'll get them to investigate even further with jetting or whatever else can be done easily to get even more from the 865. I'll certainly be watching to see what they come up with. They are at the moment working on a top end package for the 865, but this should sidestep them a bit in looking at simpler ways of getting more from it because before today they'd apparently written the engine off as hopeless as far as air and jetting gains.

.... Goes to show those on this forum, that previously have 'poo-poooed' my rants about the value of loud pipes for 'performance' gains...

These guys (thunderbikes) seem to be much more 'professional' than the rest.... Although all of these pipe manufactuers and Modification 'hawks' need better proof to back up their marketing rehtoric...

It's the simple things, like a proper windscreen/fairing or in your case, removing the snorkle, that will provide the 'real world' performance that you're after.... After all, what good is Horsepower and Torque if these are only available in narrow regions or spikes in the RPM curve???.... This goes against the Triumph design philosophy of 'Continuous Power' at all RPMs.

If an engine design can generate huge power ala. the Rocket III, then the loudness of the exhaust note is "mute" (pun intended).

This is the smart way to go..... change ONE thing and ONE thing only, determine if there is a qualitative improvement... If there is, then move on, if not, go back to square one and try a different approach.

Daz....

I'm personally happy to see that you're at least trying to qualify the marketing rehtoric... Unlike most of the folks on this forum, who seem to just follow the 'leader'...

But then.... You're a Speedmaster rider... I should expect this mentality... After all, It's was your Design/Quality and Asthetic sensibilities (And you're sense of Triumph History...) that has drawn you to the Speedy!!... I'd like to thing I share those sensibilities and independence of thought.

Seems pretty cool that they would say that to you. Pipes do a little towards allowing the flow through the whole intake/exhasut thing to go quick with less restriction. I did not dyno mine (I don't want to cry about 60+hp) but I'm figuring around 62 at the rear wheel, up from 56 stock. It arrives at the torque a lot quicker than it did, and I have'nt done the snork thing/K&N filter to go along with the Triumph off road pipes. This is great to know!

Yours is a T100 and i don't know if there are any differences in the snorkel as to how it comes off, where it is, or how much you'll gain. But if it's like the SM just do it ! It literally takes a second because all you have to do is grab it and pull it off. So if for any reason it doesn't work well you just push it back on. There isn't another tweak you can do to gain so much for so little. I can't for the life of me see why it's there in the first place other than to keep things from falling in the filter which is unlikely. And even then, why they didn't just shape it differently so that couldn't happen and still flow as much air ? I don't get it.

... You might want to keep it handy, so you can put it back in place when you're riding in a downpour !!!
