Just a rubber nozzle that sticks out of the airbox said to be for intake noise reduction. I tend to believe it's for keeping things from dropping into the air filter because it adds almost no noise w/o it, but w/o it the air filter is just sitting there exposed to anything that happens to find it's way under the seat to help clog the airway. Then again if it's not facing upwards on the bonnie then that rules out that theory.

Rubber air intake behind the left side cover.

There has been significant anecdotal evidence sighted that with a basically stock engine (perhaps with TORs and mild jetting change), removing the snorkle results in a flat spot around 4000-4500 RPM and produces little or no improvement at any other RPM range.

Due to my experience after removing the snorkle (and later replacing), it's there for a lot more than reducing intake noise.

Ibo...check to the left under photo albums. Then go to the shop scrapbook section and on page 3 (the last item) someone from this forum posted pics of the snorkel and associated air intake items.

Removing the snorkel on the BA/Speedmasters will give you a noticeable improvement in performance with no flat spots as the snorkel covers about half of the filter element surface.

I have no idea how snorkel removal would effect standard or T100 bonnies. May not have the same effect.

The length of an intake track has a marked effect - better or worse. There's plenty of dyno evidence of that on the R1100 RSvGS. The latter had longer plastic tubes that go deeper into the airbox. Fitting these to the RS reduces max bhp by a couple, but delivers HUGE torque increases in the mis range where most of us ride. It was a well regarded mod for about $20 IIRC.

So without mucking around and dyno testing I'd be reluctant to rely on seat-of-the-pants stories. This is a sophisticated area.

My experience was that I lost off idle and low speed throttle response and torque on my 03 T100 even after trying to compensate with pilot screw adjustments and main jet changes. It was frustrating because the bike was agravating to ride at low speeds just cruising around town. I put the bloody thing back in and the bike is now more enjoyable to ride. There may be some improvement at WOT but to me the sacrifice at low speed just wasn't worth it.

It gave my speedy a very considerable overall boost including torque.Seat of the pants test was all it took me to know, but now i have proof. Read Tbikes review of snorkel removal they just did yesterday for the first time. Even THEY were suprised, and this was with STOCK pipes ! (865 speedy) And i cannot detect any flat spots that weren't there before.(not that theres was anything mentionable before)

Torque is important to me, and the bike feels like it has considerably more. This is something that should be on the first page of the Triumph mod bible as far as i'm concerned. I've seen posts from some that said it was just the opposite for them. But the majority seem to have the same experience as i did. maybe those others had done mods that caused thier bikes to resond in a negitive manner upon remioval, who knows. But my bike.....well, as they say, "runs like a scalded dog"....

this tweaking stuff is becoming addictive ! :-D

Bill...it may in fact be that snorkel removal gains are exclusive to america/speedys. Come to think of it, they are the ones that responded to my poast on the subject saying how well it works. Could be a difference in the airbox maybe.
