while riding the other day I noticed that my stock headlamp brackets although pointing straight were actually slightly angled to the left. I never noticed it before. Has one of my family members dropped my bike while I wasn't around or is this the normal stock set up? everything else appears normal (no dings or scratches of any kind).

Works great if you only turn left. Loosen the headlight bolts and drop the head light out. You should be able to move the headlight "ears" freely. If that doesn't work, check and see if the forks are twisted. Maybe somebody hit it with a car in the garage? :???:

Given that the bolts to the headlamp shell are at the same seperation as the forks on which the brackets are mounted, rotation of the mounts should have no effect on headlamp aim.

There's NO problem with your bike. The headlamp housing is designed to move from side to side a little. Just push it from one side or the other to straighten it WITHOUT loosening the acorn bolts. If it doesn't remain in that position while riding, tighten the acorn bolts on the headlight some. Yes, it can be moved enough to affect headlight aim! NO, you do not need to loosen the acorn bolts to move the headlight brackets from side to side an inch or so.
Next time you are at the dealers, move all the bonnie headlights from side-to-side, and ask the salesman what is wrong with them--he probably won't have a clue. :-D

Blame it on the rubbers! Namely, the rubber seals above and below each headlamp bracket.

There is an advantage to the wobbly headlight. Fasten a piece of string to each side which then goes to each handgrip When you are in the mood for doing a searchlight raid you can point it anyway you want. Good for hunting ducks at night!

Triumph are so clever.

Interesting. I should check my Bonnie to see if her headlight is straight. I could have pushed it to the side while polishing. Something to check everynow and again.

It's funny what can be bumped while cleaning. I thought I was going crazy when my odometer went from 85 to 205 miles. I knew I had to stop for gas that day anyway, but swore someone played a joke one me while parked at work. More likely I just bumped it while doing my morning pre-ride dusting.

I believe the design is intended to isolate the headlamp from vibration at speed, a problem I've noticed with older bikes having rigid mounts. I like that I can easily adjust, even when going down the road at night. However, bumping the headlight can throw it out of adjustment quite easily.
