Can anyone tell me which way richens and which way leans the mixture when adjusting the D screws on the bottom of my carbs?

Hi No-Logic,

Backing the screws out, counter-clockwise enrichens the fuel mixture.

If you don't have a tool to do the job, people are using various things to make them, including .22 shell, M-16 shells, electrical spade lugs, just about anything that can be mashed into the right shape. Reviews of such tools suggest they are short-lived. If you're going to do this much, I recommend the tool made by NewBonneville, it's stainless steel and will last the lifetime of your bike.

Turning to the right - Leaner
Turning to the left - Richer

They adjust the mixture at idle @ just off idle.

Thanks Clifford. I have the tool ordered already. And you are right.....the right tool for the job makes sense. To me if you use it a couple of times it pays for itself.

You're welcome No-Logic.

I had that tool with me when I took my bike to have it dyno'd. I remembered I had it in my pocket and offered it to the tech when he couldn't find anything to fit those screws. He grinned really big and said "This is a really nice tool!". For all of the time and aggravation it has saved me it has paid for itself many times over!

If the screw controlled airflow, instead of fuel flow, we could say "rightie richie, leftie leanie". But, alas, the reality is just the opposite.
