Hey there. I saw two black bonnies (bam-a-lam) and what looked like a Triumph sportbike of some kind in Burlington this afternoon, looked like they might have been going to get on I-5 southbound.
I was in my patrol car, running lights and sirens at the time, don't think you could have missed me!
Anyway, I was curious if it was someone from this bunch....

You would have seen my Bonnie in Burlington today, except it's the wrong Burlington. Vermont, not Washington.

Hey copper......since you ARE a copper, i'd like to hear what you guys think of aftermarket pipes. Do you pretty much ignore them unless they're extremely loud? Do you ever ask bikers you pull over whether the pipes are stock or check for the approved engraving or whatever? I'd just like to know how serious police take this. I'm waiting on a set i ordered and i'm a bit worried about the possibility of getting cited during a traffic stop or even being stopped for that exact reason. The Tbike pipes aren't supposedly too loud, but louder than i believe is legal.

It just shows DB levels, but that doesn't tell you anything other than whether your pipes are legal and you'd have to have a DB meter to even do that. I'm more interested in how serious cops take the law. Thats something a site like that can't tell you, and there are many laws that cops don't enforce most of the time. Like the proverbial spitting on the sidewalk.
Interesting site tho, thanks 4 the link. I was suprised to find earplugs legal because a post here led me to believe otherwise about california.

Dazco, it is very unlikely that your pipes will cause you any trouble witrh the Man. At least here in Washington, your average cop really doesn't care about motorcycle pipes, in fact many of us ride loud bikes ourselves. Those little tuner Hondas are annoying, but even those rarely get stopped for pipes. Even if you get an exhaust ticket, you can usually get it tossed in court, cause the law uses a Db level and very few officers have a meter.
In short, unless you are being a pain in the a$$ and the officer just wants a hook to hassle you with, you should be fine. I have been a cop 6 years, and don't remember any of the guys on my squad ever writing a loud exhayst ticket.
Ride on, brother!

I am going to wait until next year until considering the louder and more performance oriented pipes.
One reason is that I am doing a lot of riding in the twisty, hilly neighborhood streets here in Incline Village which are wonderful for practicing low speed skills, tight turns etc.. It is residential though and the quiet stock pipes I think will prevent any of the locals from coming out their houses shaking fists or worse at me.
The second reason is that I am kind of enjoying the stock sewing machine sound of the engine. It is kind of neat to blast off down a highway running through the gears without making any noise and attaining impressive rates of acceleration. Kind of like the starship Enterprise blasting through space in hyper drive.
Edit: I guess that would be warp factor. Confusing my PG13 science fiction movies.

Couldn't agree more, I get a great buzzzzz out of same thing on my Speedy.
However I will have my new pipes on this week, it's a shame the tune needs to be reset as I would like to swap my pipes according to my mood. In the last month I will have had three sets of pipes on but this change to MADAZ pipes will be temporarily permanent, if that is possible? :-D

EXACTLY how i felt and you're the first person i've heard so far that felt the same. However, like me i bet you'll change your mind about it. Not so much because you want louder. But because after a while the gear whine and tappet noise, which is about all you really hear, starts getting on the nerves a bit and you start noticing other bike that have a nice growl to them. Then you beging to want that growl, but still not loud....only loud enough to hear it and cover up all those annoying engine noises. Unfortunatly i'm not sure any of the pipes available are really anywhere near as quiet enough to just cover up the engine noises and let you have a good tone. Even the ones i ordered which are supposedly not nearly as loud as many supposedly get rather loud under accelleration. Anyway, i got them for the perfromance gains more than the sound.
But yep, i know exactly what you mean about the way the bike seems to accellerate with no effort because of the lack of sound. I've always felt that louder bikes seem to feel as tho they accellerate slower due to the perception that the loudness suggests more accelleration than is actually taking place, and makes it feel slower. But now that i wear earplugs i don't think i'll have a problem with that.
