I have a new Bonneville, owned only 9 months, and it is developing corrosion on numerous spots, especially nuts, bolts and screwheads all over the bike.

Apart from washing it and protecting with WD40, does anyone have any other suggestions about how to deal with this?

I live in London in the UK so bad weather is a fact of life and the bike has to live in the street.

Is it worth replacing the corroded items with more rustproof ones? If so, does anyone know of a suitable supplier whose parts will match the original ones on the bike?

Many thanks.

You could get new fasteners(stainless )from New Bonneville.com....whatever they don't have you could source locally....If you're going to leave it in the rain, why not buy a GOOD cover? That should help.Mototwin has some nice covers...love the target one...any one have one?

I have an '03 that I bought new 13 months ago. It has corrosion in places and rust spots on the carb tops and silencers. I live 1 1/2 miles from the coast on an estuary with an almost daily sea breeze. This plus the added humidity of four hurricanes last fall have contributed to the problem. And yes, I keep the bike waxed and protected. I've decided to accept it and keep it looking the best I can. I bought it to ride - not to look at.

An. Which parts exactly? I live in the wet part of the U.K -North West and no bike will be subjected to corrosion more than in my area.

1. Try and get a can of Motorex 'Protect and Shine. It is superb stuff and will protect all the vulnerable areas. Spary on and wipe gently so as not to wipe it off.

2. Get a breathable, condensation absobrbing cover.

3. Coat parts that are subject to road salt with a smear of vaseline. You can also try a silicone spray.

4. Yamaha sell as set of chrome caps for the allen bolts. They are great at protecting the bolts and look good too.

5. Keep the front, chrome oil return tube clean. It get very rusty at the back.

Various fasteners are corroding; but certainly not all of them. My rear shocks have rust on them as well as the car tops. My front wheel has some corrosion; but the rear wheel is fine. I do use a cover that breathes. But I have learned to take it off when the weather clears. My problem is called by high humidity and salt laden ocean breeze. I take pains to protect my four wheel vehicles also. So far, only the Bonnie is affected except for a little bit of surface rust on my pickup's front bumper. Just the hazards of living on the coast.

anrbl will it start and shift? If so ride and enjoy. What the heck you can enter it the rat bike div. at the show. Heck I've got a 03, 26000 miles. And I've got littel spotes of rust myself. But it still runnes and I enjoy. I like a pretty clean bike, but I don't shine. Don't worry. Rudy

I spray LPS 3 Rust inhibitor on exposed screws, bolts etc. Works great. They have a web site for their products and I think it's LPSlabs.com.
