Silence is golden
I was considering trading my Bonnie in on another bike last week, so I took off all the aftermarket parts, including the Emgo pipes. I figured they wouldn't give me any more with all the good stuff on it, plus I could probably find good homes more most of it on this forum. As soon as I started down the road, I noticed how much more enjoyable the ride was without the rasping from the pipes. I could actually hear what was happening around me, and the ride was nice and relaxing. By about 20 minutes into the ride, I decided that maybe I'll keep the ol' girl. I had forgoten just how pleasurable of a bike it was. So, far all those that have loud pipes and think they like them, switch back for a day, and re-discover how nice silence can be. The rest of the motoring world will thank you.

Actually I am in the "other" camp. If I had to operate my T-100 with the stock mufflers I would sell the bike. If I don't want to hear the engine I will take the Goldwing and turn the music up. Becides, I don't think that my Norman Hydes are all that loud any way. To each their own I say.

When I bought my Bonnie (used) it had TORs on it. Using craigslist I managed (withing 48 hours of initial posting) to trade my TORs for stock pipes. I am much happier with the quieter ride, and the tradee is happier with his slightly noisier ride.

TORs give you the best of both worlds, IWHT. Keep the revs down and throttle closed through the villages, and people hardly know you are there. When you get to the GLF sign, open her up and there's that lovely fruity sound. I have no wish to bother or offend anyone else, but I do like to hear what's going on in the engine room.

I absolutely love the sound of the stock Bonnie exhaust. My previous steed was a Honda Shadow with Cobra slash cut pipes. Needless to say, I am thoroughly enjoying the change! I looked at a Scrambler with TOR's on it, and found it to be too much for my liking. I'm sure my neighbors are happy with my choice when I roll out of the garage at 0630 every morning.

My Thruxton came new from the dealership with D&D reverse cone slip-ons. I find them to be a happy medium; they're reasonably quiet when it's necessary, and can be objectionably loud when the spirit moves me. It seems there's this handy volume control on the right handlebar grip. So far none of my neighbors are organizing a tar and feather party. ..........James.

+1, I have no desire to ever change from my TORs for just the reasons you say. I am often tempted by my "if a little is good, more must be better" mindset and have checked out louder pipes, but it turns out for me the TORs are right at the sweet spot.
Nothing wrong with louder or quieter. But some say "don't buy the TORs, you'll end up selling them for something louder".I feel like I see as many pipes for sale because they were too loud as TORs being sold because they were too quiet.

I have Epco Norton-style pipes on my Bonneville and I'm pleased with their sound. They're not very offensive. They give off a pleasent burble at idle and a nice raucous roar when you give it the beans. I can even roll through my 'hood during the early hours rather discretely. I'm pleased with them.

I find the TOR's perfect. Just enough noise to be enjoyable. Really loud pipes become totally annoying on long rides. Everytime I've put loud pipes on a bike I've regretted it after a while.
