dear All

First post so if I get it wrong don't be surprised.

I have recently replaced my 01 Bonni for a new 865cc T100, bike brilliant much better motor than the 790 even in stock trim.

However during the running in period I have noticed the engine pinking even though it has now got 500 miles on it.
It goes in for the service tomorrow but has anyone else had this problem as the dealer hasn't?

The engine feels very free now and revs easily to 5000 but being carefully only in short bursts.

Any thoughts (could it be the running in oil?)

Mark

If you mean pinging, tell the dealer when you bring it in.
Are you using 89+ octane fuel?

Hi Mark,

On four star unleaded you shouldn't get any pinking noise at all. Have you tried it going uphill when it is more noticeable under load?

I've done over 6,000 miles on mine and I haven't had any pinking. However, I have to say that the tappets are very noisy - especially compared to an in line four.

You might want to try running on a different brand of fuel - say Esso or Shell. See if that makes a difference.

Get the garage to listen to the tappets and when you have run it in a little more you may find it all settles down.

Finally. The running in oil would not cause pinking. Pinking is related to the fuel combustion.

Hope I've been of help.

Note for American friends. Fuel in the U.K. is 95-97 octane.

Roadglide it is. But if we are to follow the rules and use of language then onomatopoeically you are correct.

Thanks, Robert.
Over here pinking could mean turning pink, (like the "blueing" of pipes), so the application of the onomatopoeia rule may be misleading.

Thanks for the reply guys, "pinking" I believe is a term for "pre-ignition" usually caused by hot spots in the combustion chamber which will ignite the fuel before the spark plug !

Pretty sure this is nothing to do with tappets (remember had 01 Bonnie before) Only happens after 30-40 miles when engine very hot and at about 3000 revs. Tried super unleaded (98 octane with no results)

I would usually put it down to advanced ignition timing or weak carb mixture, although my 78 T3 guzzi needed a de-coke once that caused it (carbon igniting fuel).

Can the timing be adjusted on these ? Although on a brand new bike would be unlikely it left the factory like that ?

Thank goodness "pinking" wasn't what I imagined. Have you heard the audio joke in the humour section of visordown about the three guys on the bench? Well both depend on your possible understanding of "pink".
