My Triumph mechanic tells me that he's seen some serious tourers put well over 100000 miles on these motors, without any problems at all. In fact if you did a search here, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's had problems with their engine wearing out. The fact is these motors are massively over-engineered by Triumph, & can take a lot more hp & torque than the factory intends for them. That's why we all mod the hell out of our bikes. & we rarely break them! So an unmodified one, with a perfect service history, should run forever.

I found the comment on excessive rear brake pad wear interesting. Several posters have reported replacemnts needed in as little as 1500 km. Has anybody tried the "adding small, light springs to the retaining pins to spread the pads and keep them off the disc" cure?.

Good 100,000 mile report Slinky, I have a friend with a Bonnie, I'll be passing it on as he asked me a similar question.

Thanks for posting the link to that report. My Scram is about 90,000 miles short of his Bonnie... Wow... Good reading.

From the excellent 100,000 mile report - fascinating observation:
Another remarkable feature with this engine has been in the fact that the valves have never needed adjustment. I've checked the valve clearances at 8000 mile intervals and they are still in spec. The report's author is not by any means suggesting not to check the clearances...

I also have a 04, as of yesterday I have 99,483km's or nearly 60,000mls.
As Scratcher said "An unmodified one, with a perfect service history, should run forever".
My bike on the other hand has had some mods, I've done pipes, needles, jets and filter, minor really compared to some.
"A perfect service history", not by any stretch of the imagination! yes I am guilty of Bonnie abuse, the last time it was at the dealers or saw a spanner on the insides was in 2005 for it's 40,000km service, since then all I've done is change the oil every 5,000km and filter every 10,000km. put petrol in it and ride the wheels off it.
.......motor problems! what motor problems
john
