I work in a collision shop. The take off parts technicaly belong to the insurance company.
If they could be repaired economicaly they would not be replaced so in theory the old stuff gets put in the dumpster. If an owner asks for the take off parts I let them have them rather than send them to the land fill, they are no use to me.If they were Bonneville parts I'd probably think differently.
Worst case senario is that it may be that the repair facilities workers have a plan for your take off parts. Let the repairer know that you want the take off parts. If they try to snow you (the stuff belongs to the insurance co., you can't have them, yada yada yada) tell them that you will call the insurance company and buy them. If it goes that far you will pay $$cents on the dollar, chances are you won't have to call their bluff. Let the repairer know asap otherwise you will get the "oops, the mechanic threw them out" line which may or may not be true.
And the advice to ask nicely and bring coffee is worth listening to.
