Armored Trousers?
In our last episode ("Tossed from my Triumph", or "Sailor who fell from Grace . . .") our hero tested out his riding gear on a black top roadway surface. Under the armor of the jacket and under the protection of the hiking boots, very minor road rash only. Well, except for the broken ribs. On the lower calf of the leg. above the tops of the hiking boots, slightly deeper road rash. On the knee under the jeans, the worst (but still not too bad) road rash.
So, after I heal and before I get on a bike again I will have high top riding boots (12" Chippewa Odessa), a replacement armored 3/4 length jacket, and some form of leg/hip etc armor.
Anyone have recommendations for zip on/off armored over trouser pants (not just chaps)?

I wear Fieldsheer Mercury pants. They are fairly versatile and are a good bang for the buck.
They are on clearance in a few places, but sizes are limited. FS is switching distributors and they will be back to normal prices soon.

I recommend: Whatever fits well, you are comfortable in, and has decent CE armor. Ballistic nylon or leather is a must for those abrasive moments with tarmac or gravel.

Bohn makes armor that you can wear under your jeans. If it's anything like their back protectors it's probably a good product.
I have a few different pairs of pants -
Revit Cayenne Pro pants - nicely made, can't put them on with shoes on.
Olympia mesh pants - well made, fit over pants with boots on, come with a liner
Joe Rocket Blaster 2 perforated leather pants - can't be worn over pants.
I now normally just wear a one-piece riding suit from olympia. It fits over street clothes, has armor and is easy to deal with. When it's really cold I've found the Revit gear is extremely warm and go to that.
I agree with Haggis - most of the products out there are pretty good quality and all of them work better than a pair of jeans.

I wear the same Fieldsheer gear in silver and black with the matching 3/4 jacket. Got both for less than $250 from motorcyclecloseouts.com. Looks great, plenty of pockets and plenty of armor.

I have foound both Tourmaster/Cortech and Firstgear equipment to be first rate and, in my opinion, better designed than Fieldsheer or Olympia, which I also own. Generally, I find that overpants don't fit very well, which compromises the armor position. I also sometimes wear a hockey hip girdle, which appears to provide much more protection for the hip, thigh and tailbone than any pant I own. Note that I haven't crash tested the hip girdle, so it may not work as well as it looks.

Hi Coroja,
I just got a pair of Firstgear HT II overpants. I am 6'3, 190 lbs, and wear a 34x34 size jeans and the 34 Long overpants fit like they were custom made. I haven't been out on the road yet with them but so far so good.

I recently bought a pair of the same pants. I've been riding in them in weather as warm as 80 (liner out) and as cool as 45 (liner in). I wouldn't want to wear them over jeans if it was much warmer than that. They are however very easy to get on and off.
I bought them at the recommendation of a friend who's been wearing his for over a year.

Ever since I sustained sciatic nerve damage crashing out at Mid-Ohio in '06, I've added the Bohn adventure shorts under my riding gear to bolster the hip/thigh/tailbone protection offered by my leathers/standard pants w/ knee armor. Fortunately, I cannot report on their effectiveness but can say that I like the quality of the garment and the protection it seems to offer.
Cheers,
--Rich
