How reliable are the twins?

I put on a lot of miles- 15k a year and it'll be increasing when I start wintering in Florida this year. I looked at the Triumph twins and fell in lust. I saw some of the bargain prices on the Triumph twins and I'm tempted... But I wonder how long a Triumph twin will last? Has anyone ridden a Hinckley twin for 100,000 miles or more? What can I expect to break in 100,000 miles?

thanks in advance,

GearheadGrrrl

If you do a serach on the forum, it may answer some of your questions about miles. There have been numerous posts regarding the reliability and longevity of the twins. The consensus is they are extremely reliable, and people have clocked on some very high mileage. They have a reputation of being over-engineered and undertuned, low compression short-stroke engines, using full-synthetic oil and having veritably bullet-proof cylinder lining (Nik a sil SP?)

They use a well built low-tech motor in a low state of tune.

Cycle parts are basic.

There isn't a great deal to go wrong.

They are as robust and reliable as anything built by the likes of Honda.

There was a mileage poll - there are definitely some riders who have gone upwards of 80K.

These bikes are as solid as anything else you can get.

They run great until you start messing with them!!!

Then you learn to be a triumph mechanic/enthusiast and they run even better!

I'm still very low on miles, around 1600, but from what I've read the engines are rock solid.

The electrics, vacuum hoses, and other itty-bitty what-nots seem to be the homes from random gremlins.

If you love the bike, like we all do, it'll be worth it.

Bonnies beautiful, earnest motorbikes.

GearheadGrrrl, your lust isn't misguided. Go with your lust.

I only have about 12,000 miles on my bike. Adjusted the chain and changed the oil. Over-engineered and undertuned seems accurate for these bikes. Difficult to do damage to them. Good luck with Florida.

spokes only

G'day,
In 23 000kms i have broken two spokes on ruff roads here in Oz.
Thats it.
Lo service costs cheap tyre sizes. great handling and I love the sound..mines got Madaz peashooters. Get used to talking to people cause thats what you get when you own one.
Only gripes suspension quality [easy fixed and again we have shocking roads out in the bush] and the after market flat bar is a bit buzzy compared to stock......oh did i mention I love the way it looks and my lovely girl thinks it a thing of beauty as well.
Enjoy.

From what I've heard and read...the twin is virtually indestructable. The mechanic at my dealer says he has never had to crack one open. Change oil/filter, oil/adjust chain, new skins when needed...the other 99.999% of it's life - ride it!
