triumph sixty8 tank pad, what is the function?

could someone please enlighten me as to what the purpose of this thingy is?

and as always, does anyone have this on their bike with a full pic? not the blown up pics that triumph gives us?

68 tank pad, is similar to the tank pad original thruxton bonnies had (I’ve got a pic in a book somewhere!) When racing or just giving it some you lie on it stopping the zip of your jacket scratching the tank. The vespa SS90 has something similar. Earlier racing triumphs have foam taped to the parcel grid for the same effect. I’ve got one on my thruxton it works well with the clip ons and makes motorways quick and fun!
Fixing back end is secured under the seat (seat needs to be removed to remove it so unless someone takes your seat off they can’t nick it!) top end just tie your fav knot!

The purported purpose is to separate the tank from your jacket zipper.

The real purpose is to separate you from your money and transfer it to Triumph.

If it was a 69 tank pad it might have a real purpose but it would be one heck of a balancing act.
