Tuneboy, check! What now? I feel the need to tune...

So, I bought a tuneboy through the group buy. I installed the tuneboy software and everything works well. Now what? I need to satisfy my desire to tune something! What do I do?

I have a stock 2009 speed triple.

If I look at the tuneboy tutorials, there's one on changing the air/fuel targets. http://www.tuneboy.com.au/Tutorials/...Tutorial2.html

They say that best power is achieved with an air/fuel ratio of 12.8.

This is the current stock air/fuel map.

Screenshot.jpg

This is an eye chart. There are some strange things in this mapping.

35% throttle has an air/fuel ratio of 13.25, 40% has 13.00, 50% has 13.13 and 60% has 13.25. Why the dip at 40-50%? Also at 8050 rpms they go to 12.5, which is lower than the 12.8 tuneboy recommends for max power.

As I said, I feel the need to tune something. I'd like to twiddle something that won't trash the bike and results in some difference I can feel. Do you think twiddling the air/fuel map as recommended by tuneboy is a safe place to start?

Anyone have tunes for a stock 2009 speed triple that increase HP?

Thanks,

David

I would not go and just change your tune around. Without a cylinder pressure probe, you wont know if you get into knock or not. Just adding fuel is the wrong thing to do, and although you might think your going to make more power, more than likely you will loose power.

12.8 or 12.5 is thrown out by the aftermarket tuning crowd because its a safe / fat A/F to tune to. Not necessarily the best power.

If you really want to make a difference with a stock bike, you will need to give up margin in the calibration. This means, that if you leave sea level or run on a hot day vs. cold, you might run into knock or burn out an exhaust valve. If you add an aftermarket pipe, you can get a tune that will add power while retaining some or all of the current calibration margin.

There IS some fine tuning with a stock bike that can be done on a dyno (because all heads flow just a bit different, CR is just a bit different engine to engine, etc.) But again, you will be giving up calibration margin unless you do a complete tune with cylinder probes.

i have 2009 also,i got 5 year extended warrenty too.one thing to consider is i didn't want any warrenty issues, which is why i got the dual arrows and had the dealer install the tune at the same time.

Cylinder probe???
Just jumping into this thread, but in the dozens of tuneboy threads I've read over the last 2+ years I've never seen this mentioned. That said, I'm sure you're right, but can you elaborate on how this works?

I think he meant knock sensor.

I know there are sticky's and sheeet loads of info on Tuneboy tune's etc on both T595 net and The Speedtriple.com, Do you guy's not think we should share our trouble's, concern's joy's of a great downloaded tune, happeness of diagnosing your own fault's instead of taking your Steed to a dealer!!! on here as well........Just a thought for us TB newbies on the site.

I also just got Tuneboy in the multi-buy. I think the value for me will be ...
1. Being able to share modified tunes at the click of a download. Right now there aren't many modified tunes for the America/Speedy but there will come. Wayne from Tuneboy has already supplied me with a modified tune for my America that greatly reduces the snatchy throttle issue. It disables the O2 sensor and also runs the bike slightly richer. Happy to share this tune - just PM me with your email.

2. Being able to monitor many aspects of the engine and diagnose faults without having to visit the dealer.

3. Being able to tinker with tunes (once I have learnt enough about it).

4. Being able to return to any previous tune exactly - not approximately.

Cheers,
Richard

Cylinder Pressure Probes are the ultimate in tuning as they allow you to monitor internal cylinder pressures during combustion and thereby avoid knock. But unless you really understand combustion theory, they won't be a hell of a lot of help, and they're expensive...
AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) is modified for a variety of reasons, from acoustic efficiency, and burn characteristics through to heat managment.
When you take Catalytic converters into account, the main limiting factors become upper temperature limit of the catalyst. If you pump too much very hot exh gas into a catalyst, you can cook them and reduce their effectiveness. Manufacturers have to cover this eventuality in their tunes, as Emissions certification requires testing with aged catalysts. So they dump extra fuel into the exhaust to cool the gases

It could also be to try to keep the engine torque delivery nice and smooth - an engine is very rarely smooth in torque delivery if tuned perfectly, fuelling and spark can create a smoother curve.

Just a quick insight.
