My trophy 900 had been standing for a number of months before I made the time to get it legal and back on the road. I had a problem of a sticking main clutch which seems to be clear now but I still can not always get my bike to start.
It seems that the starter motor can not continuously turn the engine and instead a number of mechanical sounds radiate from the engine. These range from a loud metal upon metal clonk to a more continuous metalic rattling. Some times after the clonk I only hear the starter electric motor turning but not the engine.
When the engine has started it revs and rides as normal. I can change gears with out problems. My guess is that it is the Sprag clutch that is not working but I do not want to start disassembling until I am sure.
Can anybody suggest any other possibilities?
What special tools will I really need to change the sprag clutch?

That is not a good sound at all. It does sound like the sprag and I would be also willing to bet there are some metal shavings floating around in there. I would tear it apart immediately.

Thanks Scott. The weathers great at the moment and I would rather ride it...I guess instead I will have to bite the bullet and start disassembling. Currently I can not get to my workshop manuals as they are packed up as I have just moved. Do you know, Is the clutch cage tool the only special tool I will need?
thanks
