Oil light coming on

Yep. Not always on. When bike is cold not a problem. Idling at 1200, no light. As I ride and it begins to heat up the oil light comes on at anything below about 1800 rpm. I would like to rig a pressure gauge so I can see what is really happening, is this an easy mod? Can I mount one permanent? Reading the manual it seems as though it can be a myriad of things. I doubt it is the switch, then they suggest the pressure relief valve, oil screen, oil pump, possible rebuild of lower end. The latter is what I am worried about, seems like when the oil gets hot, the viscocity goes down and therefore wider tolerance on the bearings? But not just normal operating temp. I rode to work this morning, about 8 miles on the hiway, and no light at idle. Bike has about 60k on it.

See if the repair manual has a place you can tap into to get a reading from another gauge.

Mine kept coming on and found that the main harness was rubbing the center frame tube between the battery and airbox. Might be worth trying to move the harness around to see if it changes.

The fact that the light doesn't come on when cold, nor when going down the road at higher RPM's and goes out when sitting still and you rev the engine seems to suggest other problems. The manual does show a fitting, costing $35. It replaces a Banjo bolt somewhere on the right side of engine to attach a gauge. But they seem to indicate that this is a temporary addition to check the veracity of the idiot light. I am wondering where I can tap in and how to run a gauge full time and do away with the light.

Goody,

I suggest pursuing this oil pressure gauge route sooner rather than later, perhaps even getting the local dealer to check the pressure for you.

My 03 1200 with 25k miles developed a top end rattle overnight, then 15 minutes of idling/testing later, a constantly lit oil light. I am deep in the middle of a complete teardown, as there is shrapnel in the oil and the cam bearings have become scored. Still not found the root cause, must be big end, gearbox or oil pump as I have checked everything else.

My bike ran for less than 10 seconds with the oil pressure light on. My gut feel is that it comes on too late to stop damage, hence my suggestion to check asap.

My bike is well serviced, and had done 15,000 fault free miles in the prior 9 months.

Martin.

Thanks for the suggestion. It has been parked for the last week. Really not a hard decision as it has bee 100+ here for the last 16 out of 17 days, that air conditioned F150 sure feels nice!
