We have three Triumph dealerships in the DFW area. All three are quoting me between 500 and 600 dollars. For this price I'm getting valve adjustment, fork oil replacement, oil change, radiator flush, plus all of the other smaller items on the 6000 mile checklist. I'll change my own oil and antifreeze and maybe save a few bucks. I can't believe how expensive these dealers are. I bet my family doctor charges less for her time. I hope the mechanic is being paid well although I bet most of the money goes in the owners pocket. Can I go outside the Triumph dealer for service without it causing warranty problems? I now have my new service manual. You can bet I'm going to get educated fast on doing my own work.

You can use anyone you like.
Providing the work is carried out corectly it shouldn't affect the warranty, just remember to get your service record book stamped.

Part of the service requires the valve clearances to be inspected.
Funny thing this valve buisiness, when I questioned my dealer re valve adjustment 'after' they did the 6k service , I was told that it wasn't a requirement at that mileage.
I did ask for it to be done at the following service though. (Not a Triumph dealer).

AndyA,

You're correct the normal service interval for the valve check is 12k.

Wayne, If you are still concerned about the valve clearances then check them yourself, it really isn't that difficult. It will make the dealer service a whole lot cheaper. And if he (the mech') knows his stuff he won't even bother checking them at 6k unless you specificaly ask.

The dealer will have the right shims too, you won't...you may have to order them an wait while the bike is torn apart.
When I did my valves, the local Honda dealer swapped shims with me free of charge--even when I came in twice in one day. They even miked one that had the numbers rubbed off. I don't know that every dealer will be so accomodating, but it never hurts to ask. Beats waiting for the FedEx truck...

Tango and Andy, believe it or not, my owners manual and my new service manual show a "valve clearance-check" at 6K. It has an "*". The footnote says "should" be serviced by an authorized Triumph Dealer. Unfortunately Americans are very legalistic in the way we look at things. It's due to all of the frivolous litigation that runs rampant in the States. If my engine "goes south" and Triumph finds out I did my own valve job they might give me a hard time about the warranty coverage. For my peace of mind I'm going to make sure a qualified mechanic does the work. After the warranty expires, I'll be doing the work myself. I appreciate all of your effort. I'm glad guys like yourself take the time to help others resolve their problems. Tango, I hope the Trophy is purring like a kitten.

Cheers'

Wayne

Considering the bike is still under warranty it's probably best you stick with the stated recomendations set out in the hand book, after that, like you say you can do most of it yourself.

I was assuming the 4 pot was the same as the tripple obviously not, glad you pointed it out to me.
