1992 trophy

Hi all i am new to the site and i have just bought my first ever Triumph a 1992 Trophy. It has a low speed misfire which then clears at around 3,000 rpm and runs on all 3 cylinders as it should, hopefully it is just down to a little bit of crud in the carbs. any advice on the Trophy would be welcome as i am new to triumph ownership.

Welcome, I am relatively new to this group as I recently purchased my 99 1200 Trophy. Have owned other Triumphs in the past. Lot's of good info here and a lot of good folks willing to share their experiences and expertise. Ride safe.

Hi Dave, welcome to the forums.
I'm a recent convert to Triumphs having just bought a 1993 Trophy 1200.
Hope you can find all the info you need on here; I've managed to unearth quite a lot of good advice by searching through the site - these guys seem to know a lot!

Hey Dave, Welcome. As to your problem the first place to look is at the coils. If it doesn't run well at low rpm's but clears up and runs beautifully at higher rpm's then the first culprit with my two bikes is the coils. I have replaced the original coils on my Legend twice(six coils.) My Trophy 1200 is still running fine but I understand that all Trophy coils fail sooner than later. I think that a '92 Triumph is a pretty rare bird. Possibly a collectible in a few years. If it's a good example I would think in a few years it would be going up in value and not down.

You might have a vacuum leak. Check the boots between the carbs and the head. Also check the vacuum ports, there's one per carburetor. They should all be covered except one with a hose leading to the petcock.

i have checked out the vacum pipe and fuel lines and the carbs and all seem to be in order so the next step is to have a look at the coils, i have read somewhere that Nology coils are the best type to fit so i will get a price for them and take it from there and hopefully they will cure the problem, are the nology coils a straight swop and just plug in/bolt on?

I haven't had to go the coil route but they should be a direct swap. Is yours a 900 or 1200? The "fours" seem to have a greater rate of failure than the "threes". Theres a thread on re-wiring with heavier gauge wire allowing more juice off the alternator to the battery. Personally I think the added cylinder draws extra power from the system. The alternators are the same on all Trophys and my 900 can't handle alot of extras on the electrical system before the headlites start to dim @ idle.IMHO.

Mine is a 900. i was out on it today and done just over 160 odd miles the bike ran good out in the countryside but became a pain when in the towns at 30 mph as it misfired badly and it runs on 2 cylinders then decides it wants to run on all 3 cylinders just when you do not expect it not recomended really as it got a little bit dodgy at times but out on the open road it was no bother and ran very good. a good ride out only spoilt by the low rev misfire but that will be sorted out soon enough with Nology coils and then it should be ok.

Not to stir things up but you may want to check the connectors @ the coils. I'm not sure these things(coils) fail intermittently, I believe once they go they're gone. Could be wrong though.
