Hi,
I'm new here and am looking for a Trophy 4, preferably used and reasonably close (400 miles).
Can anyone point me to a list of the changes by model year or know them well enough to tell me what they were?
I'm looking for a 96 or later and understand there was a windshield change for 97 but what about any engine, tranny, or suspension changes?
Yeah, I ride a Bandit 1200 and I'm keeping it for hooligan purposes but I need a long distance commuter. I've sat on a new 02 locally and like the fit. Seems like my kind of tourer, compfortable but NOT an overweight pig and I can't go too sporty due to bad knees and wrists.
The local dealer with a new 02 is wanting $9900 (0 miles, 2 yr warranty) for it. What do you think he has in it? He got it from a Triumph warehouse clearance.

Welcome Steve!!! There was a change in the shape of the upper fairing and windshield in 1998. As far as mechanical changes, I don't think there is any major difference between 96 and 2002. I am, not 100% sure on that, hopefuly someone with a little more knowledge about that will chime in.

Hello Steve,
Can't help with the year changes much. I know that from 99 on there are almost none.
I bought my 02 with 1400 miles in june 04. the dealer sold it to me as new with the full warrenty. I got it for $ 8159 out the door.
He wanted $8699. After doing some quick research, I quickly found out that the seat stinks and the windshield is too short. (at 70 the wind hits you in the back of the head) It took all of 5min. for him to shoot me that price. (sales tax @ 6.25% included).
I got a corbin, $260 and a clearshield $180?. The corbin takes 1000 miles to break-in. The quality isn't what it used to be, but it was the least expensive.
I love the bike, it's fast, handles like a much smaller bike, and has great curb appeal.
Hope this helps.

Brand new one from a dealer went for $8200 on Ebay last week.
Many minor changes between first model and last model 1200 but nothing major. Power output increased slightly over the model run and final drive gearing went from 2.5 to 1 in the first models to 2.2 to 1 in the last models. If you want to run with the sport boys from the traffic lights the 2.5 to 1 will work best and if you want to cruise the highway at 100mph then the 2.2 to 1 is the best option.
Windscreen air flow interference relates to individual riders body height however the later model screen with the slight upward curve at the top does work better that the original sceerns and seat does need to be changed to a Day long brand or similar ( see photo in album on Trophy 1200 ) A Corbin seat is better but still too narrow and a bit hard.
All round a very good bike for the very good price when compared to opposition offerings FJR / ST / BMW / Concours style touring bikes.

Thanks guys, you pretty well answered everything I need to know. I'm still trying to decide what I'm willing to spend but if a bargain comes along, it might convince me.
I might try offering $8000 on the new 02 but he didn't seem interested in dealing.
There is also an 03 demo (2500 miles and full warrranty and a few small dings) that didn't sell on e-bay. They told me their reserve price was $9500 - sheesh. I might wait a week and make them an offer just because I like that color better.

I still have the ebay result on file so if you want to wave it at the dealer send me your email address and I will send you a copy. I was a little surprized it went for that amount and I did expect it would reach the low $9's. :???:

I have a '97 Bandit 1200 and a 2000 Trophy 1200. They compliment each other pretty well. Plan on spending money on a seat, fork springs, and windshield right of the gate. Most likely you made all these changes to the Bandit. I found that the Trophy does not need rejetting, a new air filter, rear shock or cans though like the Bandit does.
I did find that I could tour on my Bandit though on a 3500 trip through Washington State in 10 days, had I known this at the time, I might have bought a second Bandit (way cheaper) and fitted the barn door wind screen and full GIVI bags. Good luck either way.
