Dirty Fuel?

hey lads

My 1200 trophy 'special' runs good for about 10 miles then starts running on a couple of cyclinders, then only runs on full throttle for a another mile then dies totally. Sit it on the side stand for 5 minutes while admiring the scenery. Start it up again, go for another 10 miles and then the cycle repeats itself.

Dirty fuel do y' reckon? Or maybe the dreaded coils?

Check easiest first: loose battery connections; plastic safe electronic cleaner spray/ lube into key hole; ecm relay (not perfectly familiar with trophy, i have speed triple, but, my s3 has three of the exact same relays for ecm which are swappable. check your relays for same and swap with engine off. keep track of what's what to put back how you started); coil resistance on my s3 is 0.7 - 0.9 ohms, check your book for coil resistance spec; loose/ fouled plugs...

Hope this helps!

This also sounds like the crank position sensor (CPS), they get hot and break down, leave to cool and they work for a another short period? Not a big job to replace.

Don't know for sure about the Trophy(mine is new to me), but it sounds like a dirty fuel filter. It sounds as though it is burning what is in the bowls and taking a while to refill due to a blockage. That would be my first inclination in diagnosing the issue if it were on my '71 Vette or '66 Mustang.

Check cps, then go for coils.

Have you had the tank off lately? If so the vacuum line to the petcock may be pinched. A quick test is to let run on prime.

Thanks for the leads lads.

The CPS was rooted, the tank had a pint of water and red, goopy sludge in the bottom of it and the vacuum hoses were hard and perished, so it could have been any or all of the above.

Purring like a kitten on steroids now. Thanks for your help.
