bike won't start
hello all,

i'm looking for a bit of advice please for my 1200 02 trophy - it doesn't want to start... Basically when i button it to fire up it turns for about a second then makes that buzzing noise when the starter button is pressed.... the only time i've had this before on a bike or car is when the battery is on it's way out but it's been on the optimate for the last month and is fully charged (i've been starting it every couple of weeks)....

anyone got any ideas what it may be? last time it started no probs - well as well as they ever do on full choke!

to add insult to injury, my jap 600 fired up as if i rode it an hour before!

any help appreciated guys...

cheers
james

My first thought would be battery terminals unscscrew them clean them with a wire brush and tryn again also check connections to the starter solonoid which is in front of the battery next to the suspension pre-load adjuster(2 terminals facing the rear of the bike) and you could check the engine eath conection which is on the right hand mounting bolt of the alternator.

hope this may help Griff

James,

My first thought would be the battery if it's more than a few years old. Even on a tender, they still go bad. I've never owned a bike more picky with batteries than a Triumph. Also, check all the likely suspects: kill switch, sidestand switch, neutral switch, clutch switch, starter relay, coil conections.
Hope this helps.

Make sure that the battery is actually good. A Battery Tender cooked a friend's BMW battery.

cheers for the replies....

i've just bought one of the new optimate's, can't remember the name, but it has indicators for dud batteries.... it says this one is fine?

what doesn't make sense is that it turns for half a second then buzzes at me?

is there a way to check this without changing the battery - say if i hook up to the car?

neutral switch
Several times my bike would not start. Especially after I stopped for fuel. It doesn't fully shift into neutral. I shift down to first and back up to neutral. It usually comes to life. I am by no means a mechanic but it was a desperate moment. Good luck, Joe

Maybe check spark plugs as well?

I had the misfortune of having to replace a broken petcock knob which led to my fouled spark plugs, which then helped me find out my battery needed to be replaced.

Everything runs fine now though!

Try what you said about "jumping it off" if it starts it will eliminate a lot of trouble shooting.

If you try Jump Starting, don't jump off of a car battery - the increased CCA will many times fry a bike battery. I've done it before with no bad results, but many times it has fried a good battery - new or older. Of course, if you do jump it off a car, and it runs fine, the worst is a fried battery anyway. I guess I'm saying just know the possible consequences of what you try, then make your own decision.
