Site glass

Ok,I put the bike up on the center stand. I took a flashlight and looked at the site glass. Nothing? I bought the bike last October and have put 1600 miles on her. Currently 4800 miles. Any ideas?? Joe

oil use

I spoke to the mechanics at Triumph. They said the bike could use 1 qt per 1000 miles. Is this common? That is exspensive. This would also be a pain on a trip. Joe

I have not had to add any oil between changes on my Trophy 12.My oil level stays pretty consistent. Even after a hard charging weekend!!
Perhaps if you can`t see anything in the site glass, your level may be a bit high?? I leave a small bubble in the top of my window, makes it easier (for me) to see any changes.

Joe,
First, go smack that mechanic in the forehead. You shouldn't have to add ANY oil between changes unless you have a leak or the engine is worn out and needing a re-build(ie: burning oil from warn rings/valve seals). OK, mabe a little with a high mile motor. Second, when looking at the sight glass, if oil is low, you will see the inside of the aluminum engine case all the way around the glass(shiny silver). If over full, all you will see is black. Oil level should be halfway up the glass with bike on center stand and engine cold. If low, add appx 1/4 cup of oil, wait a few mins, check level, repeat till full. If over full, drain, change filter, add 3 quarts of oil, wait a few mins, check level, add appx 1/4 cup till full. Should take appx 3.5 quart of oil with filter change(more or less).

Like ERV said, it is probally full.
The engine holds 3.75 qts of oil. So the last guy who changed the oil probally put 4qts in it. That is why there is no bubble at the top.
What do you do with .25 qt of oil? Dump it in the engine of course.

Invest in an oil + filter change, then you'll know where you stand. It's worth the 20 bucks.

yes

I think your right. It is on the top of my list for wednesday. Thanks again. I have 50.00 bucks set aside for the oil and the guy that had the bike before me gave me a filter. Sounds like good insurance. joe

If all you see is "black" the system is full.
If it was not full you would see a alumninum wall.
