The black ones are faster.

Grey/Black

I replaced the grey engine in my 1998 1200 with a low mileage black one I bought from a breakers yard. I believe that the black engine is geared slightly higher in fifth and sixth gears, to help with fuel economy. There is also an oil level viewing window instead of a dip-stick and the oil filler is located on the right, instead of the left, as you sit on the bike.
The alternator was upgraded from 25amps to 40 amps. The alternators are engine specific and are not interchangeable ( see my previous posts ).
In my case the black engine is certainly faster than the grey one, but then that could be because the grey one is in bits. I will rebuild it one day, honest !

John.

I guess there must be a change in 98 because my 98 900 has a black engine.

Black engines have an entirely different casting to make them a little lighter than the grey's. Most of the engine gaskets are different. As far as the internals(crank, rods, etc), not sure if the same or not. Black engine also has a beefier starter sprag unit to correct probs from the grey's. ALWAYS make sure you have the VIN#(or engine serial # if changed) with you if you order parts for the engine(or any parts for that matter). Changes are more VIN # specific than year specific. Horsepower and torque ratings are the same(by model).
