Starter relay just Clicking

Well ive had my bike for almost 2 weeks (ridden it twice) took it out today and it would not start after a petrol stop (just a click from the relay). Managed to bump start it and now ive got it home still just a click. Im hoping someone here could shed some light on the problem as I have no idea really where to look. Its a 1991 Trophy 3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ash

It sounds like your starter solenoid ? It is located under the seat, in front of the battery box. You will see the thick cables from the battery to the starter motor going to it, check the tightness of the 10mm (I seem to remember) nuts holding the cables on first, then try tapping it with a small hammer or large screwdriver handle on its side, as you have the ignition ON and the starter button PRESSED.
Hope this makes sense!

i'm interested in what you find... mine might have the same problem. Although mine starts, but when hot it doesn't work all the time...... didn't hear the solenoid click, but i was on the highway at the time.

Keep us informed.

How old is the battery? I had a similar problem a year ago (it'd start up fine and then, later, there'd be nothing) and a new battery cured it. Must have had a bad cell or two in it................................................ .............Just the "village idiot's" wisdom at it again: Jim

Not such a village idiot Jim! Triumphs are THE most battery sensitive bike I have ever owned, if your battery is more than 3 years old, I would treat it as a suspect, guilty, until proven innocent!

On my 1996 S3, the solenoid would work when connected to a 12 volt source, but not when installed on the bike- the voltage drop through the harness was too much for the old piece. I replaced the solenoid and the problem was solved. That said, I had been trying to start the bike with an old and weak battery and I suspect that contributed to the solenoid's demise...

Well ive had a couple of hours fighting with the bike in the garage and Im prety sure its the starter motor thats knackered. It has all the power of an electric toothbrush (plenty of torque but no speed) and im sure it should have enough kick to twist my wrist if I hold it. Hopefully getting it tested and repaired tomorrow then back on the bike.

Well it was the starter motor, very intermittent fault that finally became permanent on sunday. Had the motor reconditioned today and have just fitted it and everything is lovelly, im back in love with the bike.
