Question Bike wouldn't start

I was riding home from work today, and it was fairly warm, about 35 degrees C and i got held up while they got a wide load over a bridge...... the cooling fan on the bike cut in and was running for a while, and i decided to turn the bike off for a while......after about 2 minutes (the fan was still running) i restarted it because i thought they were about to re-open the bridge, only to spot another wide load coming over. So i turned the bike off again........ when i went to restart it a minute or so later, nothing!! So i pushed the bike to the side of the highway, and tried again, still nothing..... not even a kick! i turned the ignition off and waited for about 30 seconds and tried again and it started straight away without any dramas...... would it be a heat issue?

Was the kickstand down? Even pulling on the clutch will not defeat that.

It could also be a loose cut off switch on the kickstand. Mine was causing some grief two years ago. Whether the stand was up or down, nothing happened. It just needed a good tightening. It is a rectangular box about the size of a matchbook with a cable coming out one end. There is a plunger/sensor on the other that detects if the sidestand is down or not.

When you turned the key to ON, did any lights appear on the panel? Oil light, etc... before you managed to get it running? If not, could indicate something else.

Just my 2 pence (Cents for us yanks).

the stand was up, but it was in neutral, so it wouldn't have mattered if it was down. The lights all came on, but they dimmed when i pushed the starter button..... i'm guessing it was because the fan was running still.

It sounds like a voltage problem. Try to evaluate the condition of the battery. Also clean the terminals at the battery and the starter, both positive and negative. There might be a relay in that circuit also.

I found this over on modifications and workshop talk a couple of days ago. It might relate to this problem.

i'll check the battery terminals, but it turns over quickly, even when it's cold. Might be the starter relay? i'll have to work out where it is

There may be a form of Thermal Overload Protection on the starter motor. Most "short duty cycle" motors have them. This is any motor designed to run just a few moments, then have a conciderable time to cool off. Starter motors heat up quickly because of the amount of work they are asked to do with such a low voltage. The warm ambient temperature, the sitting motor, and the multiple starts may have triggered this if the sensor is going bad. I dont know about a starter motor exactly, but I run into it as an electrician every once in a while.

i had an inkling that might have been the case. Thanks for the info. I'll see how it goes during the coming week.
