Nology coils fitted, but still got problems...

So, on the advice of several of you here, i ordered and fitted Nology coils to my '98 1200, and boy what a difference!! She starts so much easier, and idles much more smoothly.

One problem still remains though - she is "popping" and "farting" out of the exhausts like there's no tomorrow. This happens from start-up, but seems to get worse as the bike warms up. Now i'm no expert on carb setups, but my best guess would be that excess air was being drawn in somewhere, although to the best of my knowledge none is. I have replaced the airbox and all the carb rubbers. Could this be a timing problem?

Also, the exhaust does seem to smell quite "rich".

Help!!

WB,
I would think a carb prob. Expecially if the exhaust smells "rich". Sounds like it's time to have the carbs disassembled and cleaned. Pay attention to the float height(too high will run rich), and check the float valves, may need to be replaced if they have a "groove ring" in the rubber preventing them from sealing. Make sure the carbs are synced after re-installed. Also, how many miles on the engine? May need to have the valve clearances checked if they havn't been done in a while. Also, check the plug wires for corosion inside the terminals(use a bright light to look deep into the ends). Timing is controled by the igniter, would have to be tested at a Triumph dealer, but I don't think that's the prob.
Hope this helps.

Rich, popping,etc

Do you have one cylinder that's not firing (maybe a bad lead, cap, or plug itself)? Check for a cold exhaust header pipe.

It sounds like a plug wire crossed or a bad plug. Spray the exhaust pipes, near the radiator, with water to see if one is not firing. Check the wires at the coils. Spray the plug wires (while running) with water to find a cracked lead.
My 2 cents
