Anyone install temp. gauge?/possibly getting hot

Hi. Last weekend riding I seen the temperature light flicker on and off. The fan is working, just not sure what the temperature actually is. Not sure yet if maybe it's a ground problem or actually getting too hot. Anyone had any problems like this before? Thanks in advance!

You didn't mention the year of the Trophy, but the later ones had a bulletin sent to the dealers about grounding the light, I believe, separately. It was done to my 02 and the problem ended. Also, a product like "Water Wetter" helped as well.............................................. ...................................... Hope this helps: Jim

Jim, thanks for the information. Mine is also an '02 1200. Can you elaborate on what they did to it? Thanks.

I have considered removing the non-working clock with a temp gauge. I think the sensor for the light is on the left top of the engine. I would remove the light sensor for the gauge sensor. There would be some shade tree engineering to fit the new temp gauge sensor into the head, but doable.

I think I got somewhere tonight. Has anyone had trouble with the sending unit? I pulled it out, ohmed it out like the Haynes manual says do, and it shows nothing. Just like it is open. Going to check on ordering one tomorrow.

It should be open, until it reaches "critical mass", closes the switch, provides a ground, and turns the light on.
Try to test the switch in Hot water to see if it is closing at the proper temp.
Have you verified that the engine is not really over heating?
Flushed the cooling system, lately?
How many years/miles on thermostat?
Washed outside of radiator?

I had it in a pan of water that was 140* Farenheit. This is how the manual said check it, hope it's right. I checked a new one this morning, not the right one for the bike, but it showed closer to what the book said than the one out of the bike.
