Air Box Mod

After realizing that any consistent maintenance was impossible with the stock air box set up , I set out to make mine more user friendly.
I can now remove and install carbs with air box on. Or airbox by itself! After cutting off the inlet ducts I added the K&N reusable filter and a single layer of open cell air breather wrap to the outside of the filter. I will post a link to pics of the mod very soon.

Gr8lite,
Did the same thing for the same reasons 4 years ago. Ended up buying a new airbox. Just didn't run right. The nature of the CV carbs require a ballance between vacuum, preasure, and flow to meter correctly. Here is my new air box mod. Box can be removed without disturbing carbs, and runs as good as new.

Nice mods, Erv. I've often thought that the airbox should have had a port on the end that you could unbolt, open the airbox, slide the filter out, clean it, oil it, replace it, whatever, and slide it back in, and close it up. Much like servicing an airconditioner filter in your air return of your house. It wouldn't have take anymore time to design it the way it should have been designed to begin with.

Erv, Did you mean that the filter can be removed without disturbing the carbs? Your set up looks like the real deal. As has been mentioned by others this is the way it should have been designed all along. Thanks for the pics.

Trophy4, flybiker251,
You still have to remove the air box to get the filter out, it's just a lot simpler to remove the left side of the box cover and then slide the whole box out the right side without dicking with the carbs. Also, you wouldn't want a slide-in filter ala an AC system, it wouldn't be sealed very well letting dirt into the engine. I'm still looking for a good way to seal the slot in the cover where I cut it. It does suck a little dirt in there, but it's trapped by the filter so no prob. Also, the slot doesn't let so much air in that it effects the carb operation like it did when I cut the ends off like Gr8lite did. Over all it works pretty good, Triumph should have done something better from the get-go.

Happy Trails,

Erv

How about black plastic "T" Moulding - you could probably epoxy one side and trim the barbs...
