what to check on an un-used bike

hello again,

my trophy has been in the garage since it went to italy and back last year (i'm based uk so it's not as exciting as most of you will be thinking!) and i'm wondering what to check or do to it to prep it for the same this summer...

gonna do an oil / filter change but i'm not too hot at mechanics but don't like paying them as i don't trust them!

i'm sure you guys will have suggestions for me... i have a haynes to guide me along.

cheers
james

james,
If everything was done to properly to put bike in storage, just follow haynes to put it back in service and everything should be ok. If not, pull plugs and put a tablespoon of oil into each cyl and turn engine over by hand to lube rings/cyl's. Check fuel/vac lines for cracks/dry rot. Check/replace battery. Check all electrical systems. Lube suspension. Check brake/clutch oil(replace if not done in last 2 years). Check tire preasure/dry rot. Check coolant(flush/replace if not done in last 2 years). If fuel was drained, fill and check carbs/system for leaks. Check carb sync. Check/lube all controls/cables. Replace fork oil if not done in last 2 years. Change engine oil/filter.
If I mist anything, it's 'cause I'm watching the NFL playoffs.

bloody hell that a lot of stuff... was thinking more like the basics... the bike starts no problem and its been on centre stand so back wheel is ok and front looks fine...

was thinking if anything may have come loose or may need checking for safety... .i'd love to be able to do all the things you suggest but i'm only learning these day!

Erv is giving you good advice for getting your bike back on the road.

**The most important is oiling the cylinders because the oil will have run off the cylinder walls after sitting for year(s) and you do not want the piston rings to be scraping the walls of the cylinders. It will take only a short time to build up oil pressure once the engine is started, but it could be enough time to cause engine damage.**

All the other items such as proper lubrication, hoses, coolant, tires are very important also. I am a mechanic and can do all my own work but if you are not comfortable with everything it would probably be in your best interest and safety to pay to have it done properly. If you let us know what area you are from maybe someone could recommend a good, honest mechanic you can take the bike to.

I had to do all the above on my car and bike when I returned from my tour in Germany after 2 years.

Good luck!! mcG63
