Gee, that's just over 50,000 miles.

If you've ridden it harshly or been complacent on oil changes - *maybe*.

Hummm.. I have about 80,000 miles on my 1998 and the cam chain looks fine. I had it out a couple weeks ago and there didn't seem to be any noticable wear. I have put all 80K on the bike and they have not been easy. I keep oil changed and valves in check though.

I have not heard form anyone personally who has had a cam chain give out causing damage. Was the bike having any problems or did you take it in for routine maint?

Cam chain slider/adjuster, maybe. But I can't see the chain wearing out in 50,000 mi unless there is some other probs in the top end. I would check the cam chain adjuster spring length, make sure it's within speck's. If too short, could cause chain stretch due to running too loose and sloppy.

50000 miles is the recommended replacement interval for a cam chain on the T3 series, just to be safe. I'm up to 92000 miles on the original one.

Interesting thread. My mechanic advised me to change the cam chain every 30k miles. That said, he has also had significant amounts of money off me in the past for work that didn't need doing, or work that wasn't done properly. I guess he did me a favour in the long run though, he gave me the impetus to go out and buy the Haynes, and i now have the confidence to tackle jobs on the bike that i wouldn't have done 12 months ago.

Just in the process of changing the cam chain, the blades are in good condition but the tensioner is at it's maximum extension. I guess another few hundred miles and it would have started to get noisy.
