New 2000 Trophy owner, no key for luggage?

I just bought a 2000 Trophy 1200 with 32,000 miles on it. I have a couple of questions after researching here. The ignition key fits the bags mounted on the side, but will not operate the lock on the top box. If this box has been replaced, how do I go about rekeying that lock or getting a new lock to match the ignition key. Right now I cannot remove the top box at all , because my key won't fit it. The second question is about a miss under hard throttle. I have read about coil problems here and I have no history on the bike. What are the best step by step instructions to try to remedy this miss. I'm brand new to this forum and any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Key situation

The top box was an add on and had a different key. If you were not given the key and the box is unlocked you can fix it pretty easy.

1. Remove the latchs and locks from the bag.
2. Remove the locking mechanism from the latch (there are 2 very small
screws that once removed will allow the lock to slide out.
3. Insert the key you have into the lock and see what tumblers (not sure
what they are called) protrude from the casing. You can switch these
around (beware of the small springs in the casing with each tumbler) and
often 1 or 2 of the tumblers will then either not protrude or protrude less.
4. Any tmbler that protrudes (even a small amount) when the key is in place, must be filed down so as
not to protrude. Use a metal file (you can buy one at Home Depot for a
coupe bucks) to file them down.
5. Keep fitting the lock into the latch to see if your key can turn it in the unit.
6. Once the lock can turn freely in the unit with key in place reverse steps 2
and 1.

Or... take them to a lock smith. Don't let it intimidate you though. I had never messed with locks b4 and it took about 10 minutes per lock.

You will also need to remove the lock that holds the bag to the rack and do the same to it. Since the topbox is locked in place, you will need to take the system apart that holds it in place. The topboc has an insert that covers the entire bottom of the box. Use flat head screw drivers to prise it out (being careful not to break it). I can not remember what exactly held this insert in place. Once that is out you will see the hardware that holds it all in place. I have never taken it apart this way, but from what I remember when I had to repair mine, it can be taken apart once the insert is out.

Hopefully someone else has a fix for the missing issue.

Welcome aboard!
Hard miss...check sparkplugs and try to "read" them to figure out which cylinder is missing. This
will tell you where to install your new coil...sorry.

Thank you for the responses. The more I ride the bike, the miss is slowly clearing up. I know I need to install new plugs just for the piece of mind. Does the the Trophy need premium fuel? I filled up with Amoco premium yesterday and road bout 50 miles and it is feeling better. As for top box I will take your advice and take the locking system apart. I have a buddy at a hardware store that knows how to re-key locks. Might have to ask for help. I'm new at this street bike thing, so I have lot to learn. I was adament about buying a Triumph because of engine reliability and being different than everyone else. Thank you for your responses and I'm sure I will have many more questions. I hope they are intelligent ones.

You don't have to run premium.I have run mid-grade in all my Hinkley Triumphs and they run just fine.I've been in the middle of nowhere a few times where there was one pump, regular only, seemed to run fine on plain old regular.V-Twins need the higher octane.

Brian,
Thanks for the offer, if I'm not called in to work this weekend I hope I have a chance to work on it. Just from reading other posts for the last 5 or 6 weeks I have been impressed by how nice folks are to others here. Like I said I'm new at the street bikes and have lot to learn, but I feel I can ask questions here and will get good help. Thank you again.

Just for the hell of it, I was playing around with the trunk to see what it would take to remove one that is locked in place without having the key. If you didn't get to your's already let me know and I'll tell you what I did to remove mine.
