Over heating in city driving?
During the summer, my Trophy 1200 is my daily driver since it gets over 3 times the fuel mileage of my truck.
On two separate occasions now, while driving around town on 80-90 degree days at speeds of 20-40 MPH usually around 3K RPMs, I noticed that my temp light would start to faintly light up.
Has anyone here had issues with their trophy over heating? I have checked my fluid levels and they are good.
Is this normal?
Thanks, Josh

I've not had my Trophy long enough to know about that, but I did have a Thunderbird Sport for many years that the light would come on, about the same time as the radiator fan under those conditions. Is your fan coming on to help cool things off? It would be normal for you bike to run hotter under those conditions, and the fan to kick on to help cool things back to normal.

Hi Josh,
There is a factory service bulletin on this problem. The ground wire for the light, or the sensor, has to be removed from the harness plug and grounded directly to the frame. My dealer did this, or said they did, a couple of years back and the light has never come on again. I've also used "Water Wetter" and later, the Engine Ice brand of coolant (again, dealer installed) with no re-appearance of the light. Now, does anyone know if the light should come on with the key, before you start the engine?? Mine doesn't and it makes me wonder about the bulb itself. By the way, mine is an '02 1200.
Hope this helps: Jim

I have the sprint executive and had the problems you describe. Mine turned out to be out of adjustment carbs. After adjusting and syncing no more problems

Thanks for the info.
Yes, the fan comes on to cool it off and then the light goes back out afterwards.
I will check out the ground wire when I get a chance.
This winter, i was also considering taking my bike the way of the Trodent, and I would guess that going naked would probably help keep it a little cooler. I have been looking around for parts, but if anyone knows where I could find a headlight and instrument panel that would be great. (or if you know if i would be able to use the original panel)
Thanks again for the tips guys
Josh

Over heating in city driving
In the hot, southern summer days (I live in Birmingham, AL), my '96 Trophy will overheat if I'm in stop'n'go traffic in 95+ degF days on the highway. Even the fan can't bring the temps down when it's that hot out there! Speeding up to 15-20mph, and the fan stops/temp light goes back out. But heaven help me if I get stopped in a traffic jam/accident jam that's barely moving!
Days/conditions like I just described are why I bought a Legend TT to complement my Trophy for hot weather riding when I don't need the luggage capability of the Trophy.
Gas Mileage/Fun are the reasons I added a Suzuki DL650 to my stable of bikes!
YMMV

I also live in a hot part of the country. It gets very hot on the gulf coast of lower Alabama. I also have a legend TT that I use as my summer bike. My light has never come on while riding the Legend. The fan does . I pulled the light panel off the other day to clean it and try to make it more visible and discovered that there wasn't a bulb in the temp. slot. I guess that's why it has never come on. usually when a piece of machinery is consistently running hot it starts to smell. I have never smelled either of my bikes so I have to feel like they aren't running too hot. I am going to put a blub in the temp hole just out of curiosity. When a piece of machinery runs hot it usually causes the seals to start breaking down. This is where the smell comes from. So if you don't smell a hot oily smell then you probably aren't running too hot. Just a thought.

Well, I am from North Dakota and who would think it would be that hot here, but for the last month its been 90+ up into the 100s. It gets really hot here and it doesnt make sense! we are practically in canada! Just for a little comparison, the record temperature in Texas is 120 degrees... NDs is 121.

Anyway... Yeah, my fan always kicks on and cools it down good if i am moving slow, but usually i just pick up speed to get some airflow in there and it cools back down, I was just wondering if this is typical.
Thanks!
Josh

Josh,
Have you ever flushed your cooling system or replaced your thermostat? Both tasks are easy to do.
I am not suggesting "throwing parts" at your bike, but curious about preventive maintenance.
What year and how many miles on your Trophy?
Mark

Good call.
My light use to come on from time to time (love those central Mississippi summers). After flushing the radiator and running water wetter, no more problems. A clean running system cools better.
