Unhappy Low speed jerkiness

Hiya guys, hope somebody has a few suggestions.
I have a real problem with my 94 1200 Trophy. I've just got it on the road again after a couple of years lay up. There is a realy bad snatching when on and off the throttle at low speed, around islands etc. The chain and sprockets are in good nick and adjusted correctly. When on the centre stand and in gear there is about 2 inches of movement on the back wheel. The rear wheel shock absorber seems OK and all the movement seems to be up front somewhere. Is there a shocker in the clutch? or have i got a lot of wear in the primary drive or gears? any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers Joe

Hi Joe,

Some silly questions: Did you check the plugs & carbs? You may only need to give it a good run with a carb cleaner in the fuel; I use Techron in all my fuel tanks (cars, bikes, equipment etc.) If you haven't, give it some time to clean itself out before tearing into anything. Two years of sitting around is a long time and, my guess, is that the carbs need to clean themselves out.

Just the wisdom of a fool coming through: Jim

My wife's Trophy had a lot of hesitation and coughing at any RPM below about 2000. Ran great above 2000 RPM. Turned out to be the coils. After replacing the coils, the bikes runs great below 2000 RPM and even better all around. Best money I've spent on her bike.

Please explain the 2" of play while in gear on the center stand.

Hi again,
Yes, I have replaced plugs and the carbs have been off and cleaned. I don't think its an ignition or carb problem as the engine runs great, no lack of performance although it is a little hesitant at low reves when pulling away gently - goes like stink when giving it some stick tho!.
I'm sure the problem is either gearbox or clutch, the transmition is very statchy when you open and close the throttle, its much more noticeable at slow speed and in lower gears.
I can turn the back wheel by about 2 inches when the bike is in gear on the centre stand - I would expect some play but not this amount - It almost feels as if the front sprocket is loose!
Clutch shock absorber? My haynes manual doesn't show one, but surely there must be one in there somewhere.
Hmm...
