I am a new proud owner of a 99 trophy. The bike is great, except I have a problem with a rattle starting at 4k and it deminishes at 5k. It has 10k miles on her and had a valve job at 6k miles. During that process, only one valve needed shimming. Its whole life it has seen mobile syn ran in it. Seems to resonate up through the hole the forks go thru. If its the engine it is the front part. It only happens under load while accelerating. In 6th gear it happens about 75, which really sucks because if I am on a hway thats about were I run. Im pulling the fairings this morn and hoped that you guys could help with some key thing to look at.
thanks in advance,
Paul

Here is my question Paul. Does performance seem to suffer? If yes, I would start getting concerned. If not, then it may be nothing to worry about because the Trophy engine is a bit on the "noisy" side. It is a well built motor that will perform a long time, but it not a smooth sounding motor. With only 10K on the clock I doubt you have much to worry about, especially with a recent valve check.

Ok, here it is. I think you are right. even though the noise is irritating and loud I dont think its anything to worry about. I did however pull the cam chain tensioner spring to check free length and it was 70mm compared to i think the sp[ec says 73.5. I also pull the tensioner ratchet arm and CLANK, i couldn,t believe it, i just jumped time, ugggg. anyway, I pulled the valve cover and side cover to get it back in time and noticed the exhaust cam was out too. HMMMM, donno if what I did had a affect of that cam too, but I put it back in time and then checked my valve adj. everything is great, except my one #1 intake valves were at 9mm intead of the suggested 10, oh well, I live with that. In fact with wear it should check just right next valve adjustment. Anyway, in the process of all this I ended up breaking my throttle cable were it gos into the houseing on the bar. "cheap freakin plastic crud" so I ordered a new throttle cable and checked into the spring for the cam chain tensioner. turns out you cant just get the spring you have to buy the whole thing, 100 bucks, I said nahhh, think I will spacer it a mm or so and leave it. Anyways, all that work and now Im waiting on a cable to come in wed.

Man, throttle cables are a beeatch to change on these things. Rattleing came from cam chain tensioner spring. I streched it back out to 74mm and put it back in and no noise now. Awesome!!

Mine rattled and found out it was the plastic cover that surronds the key lock and has the Triumph emblem on it. If it's your problem put some foam underneath or remove it.

You will find that the clearances will tighten. The cam lobes and shims don't wear, it's the valve face and seat that wears, gradually raising the valve in the head.

My wife accidentally trashed a 96 Sprint 900 I once owned. Maybe this happened to the Trophy? What she did was to lug the motor severely because she was afraid of shifting in the corners. The timing chain jumped so many teeth that the engine quit. My inspection found that the blade tensioner had busted. The forward one secured under the head!!

It was not impossible to fix all the damage. It did require removing the head. The total cost to return the bike to a good runing condition was only $300.

In my case, I bought her the new ST Sprint. Her complaint was that the 96 Sprint was too tall and top heavy in a corner. The ST Sprint (04 model) was a definite improvement.

I did finally figure out what happened to the bike from a lot of "intense grilling" of my wife under a bright spot light. She broke down and told me she would be in 4th or 5th gear going around 10-20 Mph in tight corners.

I figure this is what made my chain jump and finally break the tension blade.

With the ST Sprint, my wife and I do two things. I told her not to let the engine drop under 3000 Rpm's. She is very good at this. Also, we don't go on any roads with extreme corners this tight. I am talking about corners with signs that say "10 Mph".
