Replacement Windshield

Hi All

I am looking for a replacement windshield for my 99 1200 Trophy, the current windshield is the perfect height for wind buffer off the top of my helmet .

Can anyone suggest a vendor or company that sells a good replacement?

I originally got the XL and it was too tall - unless you enjoy looking through a windshield all the time. Then tried Jim's medium or 2" above stock and it was just right! Wind deflected nicely, no buffeting and I could see over it nicely. The variable vents are a nice addition for summer riding.

I'd go with the one that Paul bought from me; I've "shrunk" over the years to 5'6" and the 2" over worked out fine. Clearview has a formula to measure the size you'd need, I believe, and the adjustable vent is a big "plus", even if it's opened just a bit to send some air up the back of the screen to ease some of the "vacuum" created by the screen. I always thought that made it better in the rain.
Anyway, that's just the "village idiot's" $.02 worth on the subject: Jim

I'm just over 6 ft and on my 1998 Trophy I cut the "flip up" bit (about 4 inches) off the standard screen and it works perfectly for me. Previously the air flow off the screen was at head height and was very uncomfortable at high speed. Yes the air flow is still there, but it is now a chest height, which doesn't cause me any problems.

I just put strips of masking tape across the screen and then marked the curvature I wanted with a felt tip pen. Then using a fine toothed hacksaw blade, which again I wrapped masking tape around one end so I could hold the blade without the teeth digging in to my hand, I carefully cut along the line I had marked. The screen didn't crack and once I had cut off what I wanted I cleaned up the edge with some sand paper and then re-fitted the rubber edging strip - you will need to shorten the edging strip by a few inches. End result looks good - gives a more sporty appearance and stops my head from being buffeted all over the place. In fact I like a bit wind pressure against my chest when riding - reduces the load on my wrists and also helps to keep me cool in hot weather (when we get some). I don't like riding behind a tall screen. Mind you that's just my personal preference!

I can't say it reduces the amount of wind noise. I always wear ear plugs because no matter what helmet I try or even screen size I am always conscious of wind noise. Ears plugs are a cheap and effective solution. Also with my advancing age I want to protect my hearing.

Thank you again sir. It's my next to-do job. Anything to get rid of the buffeting. I still really want to love this bike but it's taken me 8 or 9 years to be somewhat comfortable. Must be something really special about these bikes that makes me keep trying.

Hi

I just used a spare car Garmin Sat Nav I had as I was not prepared to pay the price they ask for a so called motorcycle version (OK I'm tight). The Sat Nav is attached using the standard suction windscreen mount they provide and was initially attached to the inside of the screen just above the instrument pod using suction only. Once I was happy with the position I then drilled the screen and the suction mount and fitted a couple of black plastic number plate screws which match the screen mounting screws. The wiring is easy to hide behind the instrument panel/cockpit fairing and connects to an inline cigar socket which is housed in the left hand fairing pocket. The supply is taken off the horn circuit which is ignition controlled and also fused, so as soon as I switch on the igntion the Sat Nav is up and running and also switches off automatically when I switch off the ignition. Being under the screen it is well protected from the rain and also the screen helps to reduce the amount glare. OK I've not got any audio but the Sat Nav is easy to read and is directly in my line of sight.
It's been in use like this for the last couple of years with no problems whatsoever. Hope this helps.

for Red Nuts

I'm confused about something. You said you cut about 4" from the stock windshield, eliminating the flair and ended up with a 19" screen bottom to top, correct? I am bothered by the same turbulence others complain about and just now measured my windshield. It's only 18" now and does still have a flip. If I was to cut the flip off I'd be at only 13-14". The screen has "Triumph" embossed in it. Wondering if it's already a Low Screen option from TR.

Hi rubber biscuit

Curious. I've owned my bike from new so I know the screen fitted is the original stock item with only 9 fixing screws. Have just been out to the garage again to measure the screen and it is definitely 19 inches and I cut off about 4 inches, so perhaps there are different size screens for different markets, or your bike has at sometime been fitted with a lower screen.

There are apparently subtle differences at play here. First off my screen mounts with 11 screws, and also I'm looking at a brochure from '97 that has a real good side-shot of the bike. It appears the wind screen continues with the same curvature as the fairing. The screen on my '01 kicks out a bit at the fairing making it more vertical. I much prefer the look of the earlier one. I also have the 18"ish size that follows the fairing for a bit before going verticle. Just lopped off about 3+" and took for a quick blast to the store. Much better but I can see another 1-2 coming off before all the buffeting is gone.

I used a fine line marker and pulled a parallel line from the top including the side curves. It was highly technical, I found a piece of scrap wood that looked about the correct size and went to marking. Threw it on the bandsaw face down and cut it off. Hit the cut with 220 grit paper to smooth out and take sharp edges off. Unless you knew original height I'm guessing no one would be the wiser.

the brochure

OK, the brochure I've been talking about is actually a pretty comprehensive soft cover book. It's marked for sale at $6.00, though my local dealer at the time gave it to me in '97. It's copyright is 1995, but does picture the "new" Trophy. Can't figure that out but I've come to the conclusion that at least three windshield configurations were used. Five screw, nine screw, and eleven screw. All with differing heights and angles.

In fact it appears the height of the windshields are all the same, or close but the lengths of them vary because the front fairings they mount to are subtly different. I think the longer overall screens are fixed to the fairing lower down by an amount that still makes them all about the same height overall.
